Price and Availability

The iPhone 17 launched in September 2025 with a starting price of $799 for the 256GB model. The iPhone 17e arrived later as a more affordable option, starting at $599 for the same storage capacity.

One notable improvement is that the iPhone 17e does not come with a 128GB base model. Instead, it starts with 256GB of storage, giving users more space without increasing the entry price. The $200 price gap between the two phones mainly reflects differences in features rather than storage.

Design and Display

The iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17e have a similar appearance with their respective metal frames, glass backs, and Apple’s second-generation Ceramic Shield on their screens; they also have an IP68 rating for both water and dust protection, and both also feature an Action button on the body.

There are, however, noticeable differences in the two notebook screens. The size of the display on the iPhone 17 is 6.3 inches, while the display of the iPhone 17e is just 6.1 inches in length. The other main difference is the refresh rate of the display, where the iPhone 17 has a higher 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, making scrolling and the appearance of animated content much smoother than on the iPhone 17e, which has a 60Hz refresh rate.

Another notable difference is that the iPhone 17 features an always-on display, allowing users to easily see the time, notification information, and widget information without the need to wake the iPhone up. However, this function is unavailable on the iPhone 17e.

Another major design difference between the two models is the display type — the iPhone 17’s display features Apple’s Dynamic Island design, while the iPhone 17e’s display continuities use the traditional notch-style display.

Camera Differences

Both phones feature a 48-megapixel main camera, which means everyday photos at the standard zoom level should look very similar.

However, the iPhone 17 includes an additional 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera. This second lens allows users to capture wider scenes such as group photos, landscapes, and architectural shots. The iPhone 17e lacks this extra camera, limiting its flexibility.

Stabilisation is also more advanced on the iPhone 17, and it supports Apple’s latest Photographic Styles features. The iPhone 17 also offers Dual Capture, which allows the phone to record using multiple cameras at the same time.

The front camera differs as well. The iPhone 17 includes an 18MP camera with Centre Stage support, which automatically adjusts the frame when the user moves during video calls. The iPhone 17e uses a 12MP front camera without this feature.

Despite these differences, both phones support 4K video recording and Dolby Vision HDR.

Performance and Battery Life

The 2 smartphones are both equipped with Apple’s A19 processor, which allows for high performance and the ability to run the latest versions of Apple’s software, including some of its newest features.

The iPhone 17e uses a modified version of that processor, which includes one less GPU core, but you will not notice a major difference while using either of these devices.

The same apps will launch fast on both devices, and you will be able to multitask smoothly without issue.

You will see a slight improvement in battery performance on the iPhone 17. Apple says it can provide up to 30 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 17e can provide 26 hours of video playback.

The charging performance of iPhone 17 is better than the charging performance of iPhone 17e because the maximum wired and wireless charging speeds will be higher for the iPhone 17 than they will be for the iPhone 17e.

You can charge your iPhone 17 using MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging, but you will be able to charge at lower speeds if you use iPhone 17e.

Which One Should You Choose?

The iPhone 17e offers excellent value for its price. It provides the same A19 chip, generous 256GB storage, MagSafe support, and a capable 48MP camera, all at a significantly lower cost.

However, the iPhone 17 justifies its higher price with a smoother 120Hz display, brighter screen, longer battery life, and a more versatile camera system that includes an ultra-wide lens.

For buyers who mainly want strong performance at a lower cost, the iPhone 17e is a practical choice. Those who care more about display quality, camera flexibility, and the full iPhone experience may find the iPhone 17 worth the extra cost.
