Samsung Unveils New Foldable Display Tech To Take On Apple And Rivals

Samsung has been leading the pack when it comes to folding phones, with Huawei being one of the only brands that can really match its dedication to the category. One of Samsung’s biggest strengths is that it makes a lot of its own hardware instead of just piecing phones together from parts bought elsewhere.

Samsung’s Foldable Leadership

That brings us to one of the most important parts of a folding phone, the display. Samsung has just introduced a new brand name for its folding screens: Mont Flex. The name is a bit unusual, with “Mont” coming from the French word for mountain. Samsung says this is meant to “represent the pinnacle of foldable innovation,” and it’s also an acronym.

Yes, you read that right, “Mont” squeezes in “mechanical durability,” “opto-mechanically flat,” “narrow bezels,” and “thin and lightweight design.” Not exactly the easiest thing to roll off the tongue, but that’s the idea.

This new branding pulls together the key features Samsung wants to highlight about its foldable displays, including the claim that the latest tech can survive 500,000 folds in its lifetime. In real-world terms, that’s 50 folds a day for 27 years.

Samsung first jumped into foldables back in 2019 with the original Galaxy Fold, and the models have been getting sleeker and more refined ever since. The latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 are impressively thin and light.

A big part of that is thanks to innovations like Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), which sits just under the top protective layers and is bonded directly to the OLED panel for extra durability. Samsung also uses a technology called Lead, a polariser-free OLED display that boosts brightness while cutting thickness by up to 20%.

From the Galaxy Fold to the Z Fold 7

All of these improvements now live under the Mont Flex name, at a time when interest in foldable displays is steadily growing. That is great news for SS’s own devices like the Z Fold 7, but it also helps the company stand out against rivals, especially if an “iPhone Fold” becomes a reality in the future.

Since Samsung also supplies components to other big brands like Apple, this push for brand recognition might be about more than just its own phones. Some manufacturers already brag about having a Samsung display inside, so why should foldables be any different?

Just like Qualcomm turned Snapdragon into a name people recognize, and phone makers proudly highlight Sony camera sensors, Samsung could be setting up for the next big brag, having a Samsung Mont Flex display in your folding phone.
