World’s first Sodium-ion battery for mobile unveiled

Elecom has launched the world’s first Sodium-ion mobile batteries, DE-C55L-9000BK and DE-C55L-9000LGY. The battery has a capacity of 9,000mAh and offers more safety, longevity, and stability than traditional lithium-ion batteries. This battery has now emerged as a better option, especially in the race for portable power stations.

Technical Specifications and Charging Features

The battery has a 45W output and 30W input with a USB Type-C port. Apart from this, it also includes 18W USB Type-A output and support for USB PD/PPS fast-charging protocols. This battery allows charging the power bank and device simultaneously, allowing users to use laptops or other devices throughout the day without stopping.

Heavy Design and Weight

Its design is little heavy with the weight of 350 grams approximately. This weight makes it comparable to the average 20,000mAh lithium-ion battery, which may make it somewhat less appealing. However, its superior battery life and safety make it a solid option.

Sodium-ion battery extreme weather performance

Elecom’s sodium-ion battery also works in extreme temperatures, ranging from -35°C to 50°C. It is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. It uses recycled plastic and paper-based packaging for the battery case. It also reduces reliance on environmentally unfriendly mining processes.

Eliminates the need for rare metals

Another benefit of the sodium-ion battery is that it eliminates the need for rare metals such as cobalt and lithium which is required in lithium-ion batteries. Which means that this battery is better for sustainable resource management and it is more safer for the environment compared to lithium-ion batteries.

Improved safety and lifespan

The risk of thermal runaway of sodium-ion batteries has also been significantly reduced, which also reduces the chances of fire or explosion. In addition, the lifespan of this battery is 10 times longer than traditional lithium-ion batteries. Its lifespan can be more than a decade, making it an ideal choice for users who need long-term reliability.

Price and limitations

However, this technology is still in limited use, which makes this battery a bit expensive. It costs 9,980 yen (about $67). After a limited-time discount, the price drops to 8,980 yen ($60), but it is still more expensive than lithium-based batteries. Also, disposal of this battery is still a challenge, as it is not part of standard electronic recycling programs.

This new Sodium-ion Mobile Battery from Elecom offers several advantages over lithium-ion technology. It is not only ahead in terms of durability and safety, but is also a great option from an environmental point of view. However, its high price and limited recycling options may not make it perfect for all the users, however it may be a better option for users who are looking for a long-term solution.
