WhatsApp is easily one of the most-used apps on the planet. With end-to-end encryption, voice notes, video calls, and group chats for literally everything, it’s no surprise it has billions of users worldwide.
But most people only use the surface-level WhatsApp stuff. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is hiding some seriously useful settings deep inside its menus.
So, if you’ve got five minutes and a phone, these seven settings are worth checking out.
1. Use WhatsApp on Your Computer
Typing long messages on a phone? Painful. WhatsApp actually lets you link multiple devices, including laptops and even a second phone.
Just open WhatsApp web on the new device and scan the QR code using your main phone via Settings > Linked devices > Link a device. That’s it. Your chats sync automatically, and you can message without your phone glued to your hand.
Perfect for work, late-night replies, or when your phone is charging across the room.
2. Silence Unknown Callers
Random WhatsApp calls from numbers you don’t know? Yeah, no thanks.
Go to Settings > Privacy > Calls and turn on Silence unknown callers. Calls from unknown numbers won’t ring anymore, but you’ll still see them logged as missed calls.
3. Lock Down Your Account with Passkeys and Two-Step Verification
Your WhatsApp chats are personal. Like really personal. Losing access or getting hacked would be a nightmare.
WhatsApp now supports passkeys, which let you log in using your fingerprint or face instead of passwords. Head to Settings > Account > Passkeys to set one up.
After that, enable Two-step verification from the same menu. This adds an extra layer of protection using a PIN or email. It’s simple, but it makes your account way harder to mess with.
4. Lock the App or Even Individual Chats
If someone picks up your phone, should they instantly see all your messages? Probably not.
With App Lock, WhatsApp requires Face ID, fingerprint, or a passcode before opening. You’ll find it under Settings > Privacy > App lock.
Want even more control? Use Chat Lock to protect specific conversations. Locked chats live in a separate folder and need authentication to open. You can even hide that folder completely and unlock it using a secret code in the search bar.
5. Hide Message Previews on Notifications
Ever had someone read your message straight from your lock screen? Awkward.
You can stop that by going to Settings > Notifications and turning off Show preview. After that, notifications will only show the sender’s name, not the message itself.
6. Take Control of Storage
WhatsApp loves storage. Photos, videos, forwarded memes, it all adds up fast.
Go to Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage to see what’s eating up space and delete large files easily.
While you’re there, turn off Media auto-download so files don’t download unless you tap them. Also, disable Save to Photos under Settings > Chats to stop WhatsApp images from flooding your gallery.
7. Back Up Your Chats
Phones get lost. Apps crash. Stuff happens. WhatsApp lets you back up chats to iCloud or Google Drive via Settings > Chats > Chat backup. You can back up manually or set it to happen daily, weekly, or monthly.
There’s also an option to protect backups with end-to-end encryption. Just make sure you remember the password, forget it, and the backup is gone for good.
These hidden features give you more privacy, better security, and way more control over how the app behaves.
