Google Maps is widely used not just for directions but also for checking reviews, photos, and details about businesses and places around the world. However, many users have recently noticed a major change when using the platform without signing into a Google account.

Several users on Reddit have reported that Google Maps now switches to a “limited view” mode if you are not logged in. This significantly reduces the amount of information visible on the map.

What Is the “Limited View” Mode?

When users access Google Maps without signing in, a pop-up message may appear. It explains that the limited view can show up if:

  • Google Maps is experiencing issues
  • Unusual traffic is detected on your network
  • Browser extensions interfere with the service

The message also suggests that signing in may help avoid this limited experience.

What Changes in Signed-Out Mode?

The difference between the signed-in and signed-out versions is noticeable.

For example, when viewing a state park in North Carolina, the signed-in version shows nearby hotels and rentals, user-uploaded photos, additional details and facts about the area and more nearby businesses and attractions on the map

In contrast, the signed-out version removes much of this information. Several nearby businesses and attractions do not appear, and the overall view feels stripped down.

The difference becomes even more obvious when checking a restaurant listing.

While basic information such as address, hours, and phone number is still visible in signed-out mode, many useful features are missing. These include dine-in, takeout, and delivery status, user reviews, popular visiting times, user photos and videos, menus and related locations.

Among these, the removal of user reviews is perhaps the most significant. Over the years, Google Maps has built a large collection of reviews for businesses and public places. Many people rely on these reviews before deciding where to eat, stay, or visit.

For casual users who browse Google Maps without signing in, this change may limit their ability to fully research locations.
