Video calls will no longer be limited to just flat screens. Google has prepared to change the entire experience of video calling with its new innovation, Google Beam. Google Beam was earlier known as Project Starline but at Google I/O 2025, it got the new name.

This technology makes you feel as if the person you are talking to is sitting right in front of you. The most special thing is that it does not require any glasses, headset or AR/VR device.

Special booths, smart screens, and the magic of

  • Custom-made booth
  • Large curved screen
  • Light field display and AI video model combination

Google Beam is set up in a special booth with a large curved screen. This screen shows a partly 3D version of the person in front of you using AI and a light field display.

Google says that with this AI video model, users are able to make natural eye contact, understand facial expressions, and build trust, as if the person is in front of them.

Real-time translation will also be available, with voice and emotion

  • Language will change, but tone and expression will remain the same
  • Just 1-2 seconds delay
  • First in Google Beam, now in Google Meet too

Another amazing feature of Google Beam is real-time translation. Google has used AI to create a system that changes the language in the middle of a conversation, without changing the voice or emotion.

According to the demo, the translation takes only 1-2 seconds to complete, just like subtitles are added to a recorded video. This means that you will keep speaking in your language, and the person in front of you will hear you in their language, but your tone and expression will remain exactly the same.

Not just for business, rollout for general users too

For now, Google Beam booths and setups will first be given to selected business clients through HP. But the real-time translation feature in it is now being rolled out for Google Meet users, too, but for that, you will have to take the Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra plan.

Will Google Beam become the next big step in video communication?

The immersive, realistic, and emotional connection video call experience that you get with Google Beam is being seen for the first time in any digital communication tool.

Whether it is a global business meeting or a conversation with a language barrier, Google Beam is making every situation easy and natural, without any glasses without any barrier.
