Google Maps is Getting a Big AI Upgrade with Gemini: Google is giving its popular Maps app a major upgrade, and this time, it’s powered by its newest AI assistant, Gemini. The California-based tech giant seems to be phasing out Google Assistant inside Maps in favor of this more advanced AI system.
From “Hey Google” to Gemini
Currently, Google Maps uses Google Assistant to help you navigate, make calls, or send messages hands-free. You simply say “Hey Google” or tap the microphone icon to get started. But things are about to change.
According to a report from Android Authority, Google appears to be testing a huge update that replaces Google Assistant entirely with Gemini. This new virtual assistant, which launched in 2024, is already featured in other Google products, including the Pixel 10 series phones.
Smarter, more helpful responses
When Gemini is turned on in Google Maps, it takes over whenever you use the microphone to give a voice command. Gemini isn’t just a replacement – it’s expected to be smarter and capable of handling more complex requests.
For example, Gemini might automatically adjust your route to avoid tolls or highways, something Google Assistant couldn’t do before. And like on Pixel phones, you’ll likely be able to ask Gemini questions beyond navigation – such as checking the weather or learning more about your surroundings.
Once Gemini officially launches in Maps, you’ll probably have the option to switch to it in your app settings and start using these new features right away.
Gemini is already part of Google Maps
This isn’t Google’s first attempt to integrate Gemini into Maps. You can already use Gemini to find places and get quick information. Try asking “coffee shops near me” or “things to do with friends at night,” and it will suggest ideas along with summaries, reviews, and even details about nearby areas.
Constant updates and missing features
Google is always updating its apps, and Maps is no exception. Earlier this year, some users noticed that two popular features were removed – you can no longer share your favorite locations with friends, and some Android users lost the ability to control music or podcasts directly from the navigation screen.
When will Gemini take over Google Maps?
There’s no official release date yet for when Gemini will fully replace Google Assistant in Maps. Since it’s still in the testing phase, it may take some time before it rolls out to everyone. But when it does, it promises to make getting around – and getting information – smarter and more seamless than ever.
