Most free VPNs are either full of ads or sell your data, but Proton VPN Free Plan gives something different. I tested its main features, performance and limits to check if it’s actually useful or just another limited free tool.
Proton VPN Free Plan
The free plan does not cost anything and gives unlimited data. You can use it on one device at a time. It does not support streaming platforms and you cannot select which server to connect to. The app automatically connects you to a nearby server, mostly in the Netherlands or the US.
Speed and Server Performance
Because free users share the same servers, speed can go down during busy hours. But in my tests, on a 67Mbps broadband connection, I mostly got between 45Mbps to 55Mbps. Which is enough for streaming HD videos on YouTube, web browsing and chatting apps. You can’t choose your server. If you tap “Change Server”, it connects to a new random one, usually in the same country. There’s a short waiting time before you can do it again.
Security and Privacy
This VPN follows strong privacy rules. It does not store your IP address, browsing history or session data. Its apps are open source and go through regular audits to confirm there is no tracking or logging.
The free version has strong encryption (AES-256), which is same as used in banking systems. You also get secure protocols like WireGuard, OpenVPN and Stealth protocol. This VPN also provides Kill switch and Always-on VPN features which you can use by turn them on manually. Split tunneling and NetShield are not available in the free version.
User Interface
The app is clean and smooth on both desktop and mobile. It opens with a large “Quick Connect” button and a simple world map. But you don’t get much control in the free plan. You can’t choose your country or server. The “Change Server” option just moves you to another free server randomly.
Many features like Secure Core and NetShield are visible in the menu, but it only works if you upgraded your VPN for paid plan. The app also shows upgrade buttons in different places like tabs and settings.
Android users get extra options like DNS leak protection and a pause button. These are not available on iOS.
Should You Upgrade to Proton VPN Plus?
If you want more features like better speed, streaming access, or to select your server, the paid plan is a better choice. Proton VPN Plus starts at £2.99 per month. It gives access to faster servers, streaming platforms, Secure Core routing, NetShield and support for more devices.
The free plan is still good for people who want online privacy and basic browsing without paying.
Proton VPN Free Plan Is a Strong Free VPN, But With Limits
This is one of the best free VPNs available. It has no ads, no hidden data limits and strong privacy rules. But it also has limits. You can’t choose your server, streaming doesn’t work and many features are locked.
It’s a great option for simple browsing and basic safety. If you need full control or want to stream, the paid plan will be a better choice.
