Apple is reportedly preparing to launch the next entry in its budget-friendly “e” series, the iPhone 17e, this month. Following the success of the iPhone 16e last year, the 17e aims to deliver significant internal upgrades while keeping the price accessible for first-time iPhone buyers and those looking for a more affordable option.
Launch Date
According to multiple reports, including Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17e via a press release on February 19, almost exactly one year after the iPhone 16e debuted. While the date falls on a Thursday- a slightly unusual day for Apple launches- the company may follow its previous low-key release strategy.
iPhone 17e: Key Upgrades
While the iPhone 17e may not reinvent the wheel in terms of design, it promises several meaningful upgrades under the hood:
1. Performance Boost
The most notable improvement is the A19 chip, the same processor powering the standard iPhone 17. Apple claims this offers up to 40% faster CPU performance compared to the iPhone 16e. The new chip includes a 16-core Neural Engine, providing better efficiency and improved support for AI-powered tasks.
2. Enhanced Connectivity
Apple is also expected to upgrade the iPhone 17e’s networking capabilities. The device may feature the C1X modem, delivering faster and more efficient cellular speeds, along with the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity. There’s also speculation that ultra-wideband (UWB) support could finally make its way to the budget iPhone, enabling enhanced Precision Finding with AirTags.
3. MagSafe Wireless Charging
One of the most anticipated features for the 17e is MagSafe support, a feature missing from the 16e. MagSafe allows users to attach magnetic accessories like chargers and wallets, with charging speeds potentially reaching 25W, a significant upgrade over the 7.5W Qi wireless charging found on its predecessor.
Design and Display
The iPhone 17e is expected to maintain the familiar design language of the 16e. It is expected to sport a 6.1-inch screen, possible with Dynamic Island. The back is set to house a single camera setup. It might not feature ProMotion (120Hz) display.
Software and Longevity
Running iOS 26, the iPhone 17e is said to receive long-term software updates, ensuring relevance for at least five years. Apple’s commitment to software support has historically made even its budget devices a worthwhile investment, particularly for users upgrading from older iPhones.
Pricing and Availability
Pricing is expected to remain unchanged, with the iPhone 17e likely starting at $599 in the U.S. for the 128GB variant, keeping it within reach for budget-conscious buyers.
The device is expected to come in black and white colourways.
