Privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo has recently seen a surge in user interest, after Google’s latest AI-focused updates. These updates were revealed during Google’s annual I/O developer conference.

DuckDuckGo says it has seen an increase in updates by approximately 30% in the following week of Google’s announcement. They said they have also seen an increase in traffic of its AI-Free search options.

Now, this development has again ignited the debate around the increased usage of Artificial intelligence.

DuckDuckGo Sees Spike After Google I/O

Google introduced ” a new era for AI search” last month at the Google I/O event, rolling out deeper AI integration across its search platform.

Google has stated that this update represents one of the biggest transformation to Google Search, since its launch.

In response to the changes, DuckDuckGo reported a notable increase in activity across its platform.

“Since Google revealed its plan for an AI search overhaul, visits to our ‘No AI’ search page have tripled and they’re still rising,” a post on DuckDuckGo’s Bluesky account stated.

According to the company, app installations increased by nearly one-third during the week following Google’s event, suggesting that some users are actively seeking alternatives to AI-heavy search experiences.

DuckDuckGo has also introduced a browser extension that allows Chrome and Firefox users to make an AI version of DuckDuckGo their default search engine.

The move is part of DuckDuckGo’s broader strategy to position itself as an alternative for users who prefer greater control over how AI is integrated into their online experience.

A recent advertising campaign from the company directly referenced Google’s AI push, with one slogan stating: “Not liking the direction Google is headed? Come to the Duck side.”

Google Still Dominates The Search Market

Despite the recent growth, DuckDuckGo remains a relatively small player in the global search engine market.

According to April data from web analytics firm Statcounter, DuckDuckGo holds approximately 0.7% of the worldwide search market. Google, meanwhile, continues to dominate with a market share above 90%, a figure that has reportedly increased by nearly one percentage point year-over-year.

However, DuckDuckGo believes dissatisfaction among some users regarding AI integration could present an opportunity to attract new users.

Concerns Over AI Search Continue To Grow

The AI-enabled search experience from Google has been developed to respond to lengthier and more complicated searches with answers containing more detail than the previous type of query a user would submit to Google

The changes are designed to make the process of finding information quicker and more efficient.

However, as this approach becomes increasingly busy and chaotic with the usage of AI, criticism exists regarding the growing number of AI-created responses appearing as part of the search result page.

Some publishers believe that AI summaries may contribute to the rise of “zero-click searches,” where users can access answers straight from the search engine, eliminating any need for them to visit a third-party site to get all the needed information.

Others have cited inaccurate content produced by AI summary methods, including numerous well-known occurrences, as evidence of a clear problem with these types of responses.

The ability for users to fully opt out of any of Google’s AI-based features is limited, according to critics.

DuckDuckGo founder and CEO Gabriel Weinberg believes the recent increase in user interest reflects growing demand for greater choice in how AI is used within search platforms.

“Google is force-feeding AI with no way to opt out,” Weinberg said in a statement.

“As a result, their results are getting worse, not better. We want to be the place that puts users in charge and allows them to decide how much or how little AI they want. That’s why we’re seeing a spike in people coming to DuckDuckGo this week; it’s as simple as that.”
