WhatsApp has continuously dominated with its instant messaging services, offering an easy method to communicate with friends and family throughout the world. However, an obstacle remains for them, which is file sharing needs an internet connection. This can be inconvenient in locations with weak connectivity or for customers on limited data plans. Understanding this issue, WhatsApp is currently testing a new function called AirDrop, which will allow individuals to share files instantly without the internet.

WABetaInfo reported: “WhatsApp is exploring a feature to share files with nearby people even on the iOS app, expected in a future update.”

The report adds, “This feature for iOS appears different from the Android version, as it may require scanning a QR code to share files instead of using nearby device detection like on Android.”

WhatsApp New Feature

This new WhatsApp feature is named “Nearby Share,” which is inspired by features like Apple’s AirDrop and Google’s Nearby Share. This feature enables users to send photographs, videos, and documents to other WhatsApp users in close range without the internet. This feature is useful in situations such as:

Travelling: Share travel photos or documents with fellow travellers without worrying about roaming charges.

Rural areas: Exchange files in places with limited or unreliable internet.

Data limitations: Save mobile data for essential tasks and use offline file sharing for casual exchanges.

WABetaInfo explains: “Sharing files nearby without an Internet connection will greatly improve the file transfer experience, especially for large files like high-resolution photos, videos, and documents, in areas with limited or unstable network coverage.”

How Does it Work?

WABetaInfo suggests these functionalities:

Device Discovery: Nearby Share might use Bluetooth to find other WhatsApp users within a few meters.

Security Measures: End-to-end encryption will likely be used for secure file transfers. Usernames or phone numbers might be hidden to maintain privacy.

Platform Compatibility: The feature is being tested on the Android beta version and is expected to be available for iOS, offering a smooth cross-platform experience.

Transfer Initiation: There might be different methods depending on the platform. On Android, a list of nearby devices could be displayed, allowing users to choose the recipient. On iOS, QR code scanning might be used, similar to how Wi-Fi connections are shared.

Benefits of the New Feature:

The offline file-sharing feature offers several benefits:
