How to Change Your Privacy Settings On Snapchat: Snapchat is a fun way to stay connected, share moments, and chat with friends, but it’s also important to make sure your account feels safe and personal to you. Whether you want to limit who can contact you, hide your location, or manage who sees your Stories, Snapchat gives you plenty of tools to customize your privacy.
The good news is that adjusting these settings is quick, easy, and totally worth it if you want a more comfortable experience on the app.
How to Access Your Privacy Settings
- To change your privacy settings in the Snapchat app…
- Tap the ⚙️ button in your Profile to open ‘Settings’
- Scroll down to the ‘Privacy Controls’ section and tap an option
- Choose the option you want, then tap the back button to save your choice
Once you’re in the Privacy Controls section, you’ll see several options that let you decide exactly how open or private your account should be.
Understanding Each Privacy Option
Who Can Contact Me:
By default, only ‘Friends’ you’ve added on Snapchat can contact you directly or view your Story. Choose who can contact you directly with Snaps, Chats, calls, etc.
Who Can View My Story:
Choose who can view your Story. Tap ‘Custom’ if you’d like to block specific friends from seeing your Story.
Note: If you have a Public Profile, you will have to go to your profile to adjust your My Story privacy settings.
Who Can See My Location:
Choose who can view your location on the Snap Map. Your location won’t be shared on the Map until you open it for the first time.
Who Can Generate with My Selfie:
Choose who can generate images with your Selfie.
Who Can See Me in Find Friends:
Choose who can see you in Find Friends, a feature designed to help people connect more easily.
Note: It could take up to 72 hours for any change to this setting to take effect.
Activity Indicator:
Choose to let other Snapchatters see if you have been active on Snapchat recently.
Helpful Things to Remember
Snapchat’s privacy controls are flexible, but there are a few details to keep in mind so your settings work the way you expect:
If you choose only ‘Friends’ can contact you, anyone you’re in a Group with will still be able to communicate with you in the Group Chat. To see who’s in a Group before you jump in, just press and hold on the name of the group in the Chat screen.
If you choose only ‘Friends’ can contact you, you won’t see Snaps sent to you by non-friends – you’ll just get a notification that they added you as a friend. If you add them back, you’ll be able to see the Snap they sent you.
If you choose that ‘Everyone’ can contact you, even Snapchatters you haven’t added will be able to send you Snaps and Chats.
If you post a Snap to your Story, and then change your settings so only friends can see your Story, others may still be able to see the Snaps you posted before the change.
Make Snapchat Work Your Way
Customizing your privacy settings helps make Snapchat feel more personal and secure. With just a few taps, you can choose who sees your content, who reaches out to you, and how visible you are on the app. It’s a simple way to enjoy Snapchat with more confidence and peace of mind.
