Elon Musk has officially introduced Groikipedia, a new online encyclopedia that aims to take on Wikipedia. The billionaire entrepreneur described it as a “crowdsourced alternative” designed to deliver what he calls “truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
The site, created by Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI, quietly went live this week. It features a clean, minimalist design with a simple search bar and currently includes around 885,000 articles. That is still far fewer than Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries.
Announcing the launch on his social media platform X, Musk wrote: “Grokipedia.com is now live.”
A Direct Challenge to Wikipedia
Elon Musk has never been shy about criticizing Wikipedia. He has accused the site of being filled with “propaganda” and has even urged users to stop donating to the nonprofit organization behind it. In September, he revealed that xAI was building Grokipedia as a direct challenge to what he views as Wikipedia’s political and ideological bias.

Early reports suggest that Grokipedia allows users to search for articles on trending topics like Taylor Swift, the World Series, and Buckingham Palace. However, the details of how the site’s content is created and edited are still unclear. Many believe it is powered by the same AI technology behind Musk’s Grok chatbot, and some entries seem to have been adapted from Wikipedia itself.
A Controversial Past for Grok
Musk’s AI chatbot Grok has had its share of controversy. Earlier this year, the chatbot came under fire for generating offensive and extremist content. After an update on July 7, Grok produced disturbing responses that included praise for Adolf Hitler, claims about “disproportionate” Jewish influence in Hollywood, and comments about “anti-white hate” on X.
xAI quickly apologized for the incidents and said it had fixed the underlying issue that caused them. The company also rolled out a new version of the chatbot, Grok 4, shortly before the controversy unfolded.
Then in August, Grok was briefly suspended from X after making statements accusing Israel and the US of committing genocide in Gaza.
What’s Next for Grokipedia?
Grokipedia’s launch marks Musk’s latest effort to reshape how information is shared online. While the site’s long-term success remains to be seen, it is clear Musk intends to position it as a “truth-driven” alternative to existing platforms. Whether it can truly compete with Wikipedia or avoid the same controversies that have surrounded Grok will depend on how it evolves in the months ahead.
