Europe’s Independent Jolla Phone Sees Over 2,500 Pre-Orders

Jolla is officially back, and this time the excitement is real. The Finnish brand has introduced the new Jolla Phone, the only smartphone in Europe running its own operating system. Interest has been huge. The company aimed for 2,000 pre-orders and crossed 2,500 within just two days. All final assembly is taking place in Salo, Finland, the same city once known worldwide for Nokia’s rise.

Sailfish OS stands alone in Europe

The Jolla Phone runs on Sailfish OS, a Linux-based platform that now stands beside only three other major commercial operating systems: iOS, Android, and HarmonyOS. That makes it the only European option in a world mostly controlled by American and Chinese mobile software. Sailfish is designed with privacy in mind, offering minimal background data activity and no need for Google services.

Jolla sees this launch as a spark for new European tech growth. Antti Saarnio, Chairman of the Board, says the success could motivate others to help rebuild a complete European mobile ecosystem.

A return to Finnish mobile roots

Every phone is assembled, flashed, polished, and tested in Salo. This is more than a manufacturing decision. It is a tribute to Finland’s long history of mobile innovation during the Nokia era. CEO Sami Pienimäki calls the phone a statement of confidence that Europe can still develop its own hardware and its own operating system.

Privacy at the center of the experience

Running on Sailfish OS 5, the Jolla Phone is built with privacy as a key selling point. It limits background data flows and avoids hidden tracking. It also includes a physical privacy switch that instantly cuts the camera, microphone, and essential sensors whenever needed.

For everyday convenience, the device can still run Android apps through its AppSupport layer. Users can access banking apps, messaging services, and more without relying on Google’s ecosystem.

Second pre-order round opens after fast sellout

The first batch of 2,000 phones sold out during launch weekend. Jolla has now opened a second batch, also capped at 2,000 units. The phone is priced at €549 with a €99 deposit required. Deliveries start in the first half of 2026 for customers in the EU, UK, Norway, and Switzerland.

What comes next for Jolla

Jolla aims to build a long-term mobile ecosystem in Europe. The plan is to develop Sailfish OS further, introduce more devices, and work with regional partners to strengthen European independence in technology.

Sure, 2,500 units is tiny compared to global giants like Samsung. Still, it could be the first real step toward a European alternative in the smartphone market. Slow and steady, maybe, but definitely meaningful.
