Google Maps Is Getting a Major Upgrade with a New AI Assistant: Google is gearing up to make one of its most popular apps, Google Maps, even smarter. The company is reportedly testing a brand-new AI assistant that could soon change the way users interact with Maps.
Right now, Google Maps uses Google Assistant, the voice-powered AI that helps you navigate hands-free. You can ask it to set a destination, make calls, or send messages while driving, simply by saying “Hey Google” or tapping the microphone icon.
But according to a new report from Android Authority, big changes are on the way.
Google Gemini Could Replace Google Assistant in Maps
It looks like Google is preparing to phase out Google Assistant inside Maps and replace it with Gemini, its latest AI assistant launched in 2024. Gemini has already been integrated into other Google products, including the new Pixel 10 phone series.
When Gemini becomes available in Maps, it will reportedly take over the role of Google Assistant. That means when you tap the mic or say a command, Gemini will be the one responding instead.
Smarter Commands and More Features
Gemini is expected to be much more advanced than the current Assistant. It might handle tasks that Google Assistant couldn’t before. For example, you could ask it to automatically reroute your trip to avoid tolls or highways.
Just like on Pixel phones, Gemini may also answer questions not directly related to navigation. You could ask about the weather, your surroundings, or even recommendations for nearby attractions.
When the feature officially launches, users should be able to adjust their settings to switch between Google Assistant and Gemini.

Gemini Has Already Been Integrated into Maps in Some Ways
This isn’t the first time Google has experimented with Gemini inside Maps. You can already use it to ask about nearby locations or get ideas for things to do.
For example, you can say, “coffee shops near me” or “things to do with friends at night,” and Gemini will generate suggestions and even short summaries about places, reviews, and local attractions. It’s a useful way to get a quick overview of an area before heading out.
Some Features Recently Removed from Google Maps
While Google continues to upgrade Maps, not every change has been welcomed by users. Earlier this summer, the app lost two popular features. You can no longer share your favorite saved locations, and some Android users found they could no longer control music or podcasts directly from the navigation screen.
No Official Release Date Yet
As of now, there’s no confirmed date for when Gemini will officially replace Google Assistant in Google Maps. Since the feature appears to still be in testing, it could take some time before it’s rolled out to everyone.
Still, if Gemini performs as expected, this update could make navigating, exploring, and multitasking with Google Maps smoother and more intuitive than ever.
