Honor Reveals Futuristic ‘Robot Phone’ With AI-Powered Gimbal Camera: Honor, the Chinese smartphone brand that split from Huawei, gave us a sneak peek on Wednesday of a wild new concept phone. This one isn’t just any phone – it’s an AI-powered device with a fold-out gimbal-attached camera. The company seems determined to stand out in the crowded global Android market.

Honor Reveals Futuristic ‘Robot Phone’

The so-called “Robot Phone” was shown in an online promotional video. The clip highlighted the gimbal-stabilized camera unfolding from the back of the phone and pivoting to follow its subject automatically.

Honor called the device a “revolutionary AI device that fuses multi-modal intelligence, advanced robotics, and next-generation imaging.”

The Shenzhen-based company didn’t reveal all the details just yet. They said more information will come next year at MWC Barcelona in Spain, scheduled for March 2 to 5.

Part of Honor’s Big “Alpha” Plan

According to Honor, the Robot Phone represents “an important milestone” in their “Alpha” plan.

The Alpha plan, introduced in March by CEO James Li Jian, is a five-year strategy backed by a US$10 billion investment. Its goal is to transform Honor from just a smartphone company into “an ecosystem company” focused on AI devices.

Li said the plan will start with an AI smartphone that changes how people interact with their phones and will eventually grow into a full ecosystem, including personal computers, tablets, and wearable devices.

Most of the US$10 billion will go toward partnerships with global companies to “open technology boundaries” and “co-create a new paradigm for AI devices in the agentic AI era,” according to a company spokesperson.

Launching the Magic8-Series AI Phone

Honor unveiled the Robot Phone concept in Beijing alongside its new Magic8-series AI smartphone. The Magic8 features an advanced AI agent named “Yoyo.”

Yoyo is activated via a physical AI button on the phone and can autonomously handle over 3,000 tasks. It connects with more than 4,000 third-party apps, including Alibaba’s navigation service Amap, Meituan’s restaurant-ranking app Dianping, and video platform Bilibili.

The same teaser video also highlighted the Robot Phone’s “emotional companion” feature, which “senses, adapts, and evolves autonomously like a robot.” In one playful scene, the gimbal camera plays peekaboo to entertain a baby, showing off its charming AI tricks.

Honor Moves Into Robotics

Back in May, Honor announced it would step into robotics. The company plans to develop its own robots and help Unitree Robotics break the running speed record for a humanoid robot.

Honor’s Market Position

In the quarter ending in September, Honor and Oppo were tied for fifth place in mainland China smartphone shipments, with market shares of 14.4 percent and 14.5 percent, respectively, according to IDC.

Honor began as a budget brand under Huawei in 2013. In November 2020, Huawei sold Honor to a group of agents and dealers after tighter US tech restrictions targeted the company. Washington had placed Huawei on a trade blacklist in May 2019.
