Android Battery Issues? Instagram’s Latest Update Might Be The Villain: If you’ve been wondering why your phone’s battery is dying faster than your willpower during a midnight scroll session, there’s a good chance the culprit is… Instagram. Yep, the app we all love to hate and hate to love is back at it again, this time guzzling your phone battery like a toddler with a juice box.

Android Battery Issues? Instagram’s Latest Update Might Be The Villain

Since late May 2025, Android users across the world, from Pixel purists to Galaxy gang, OnePlus fans to Nubia RedMagic games, have all noticed something odd. Their phones started heating up, battery percentages began free-falling, and the trusty charger had to work overtime.

At first, everyone thought the May 2025 Android security update was to blame. Classic move, right? Blame the system update. But turns out, this time, the finger should’ve been pointed squarely at Instagram.

The Real Villain: Instagram Running Wild in the Background

Here’s the deal. A recent version of the Instagram app had a major power management bug, causing it to chow down on battery even when it wasn’t actively in use. Yes, you could be sipping coffee with your phone on the table, and Instagram would be secretly turning your battery into toast.

One Galaxy A53 user even posted proof on Reddit: Instagram consumed 12.4% battery in under an hour, while WhatsApp sipped just 2.4% in a similar timeframe. That’s not a small difference, it’s a full-on battery crime scene.

Application Usage Time Battery Consumed
Instagram (faulty version) 54 minutes 12.4%
WhatsApp 49 minutes 2.4%
Chrome Browser 45 minutes 3.1%
YouTube 60 minutes 4.2%

Red Flags to Watch Out For:

  • Your phone feels warm even when you’re doing nothing
  • Battery life drops like a mic during a diss track when using Instagram
  • Instagram shows up at the top of your battery stats like it owns the place
  • Power drain even when Instagram is just chilling in the background
  • Everything magically returns to normal when you uninstall or disable Instagram

The Good News: A Fix Is Out

After the internet got loud and angry (as it does), Google and Meta both acknowledged the issue. And thankfully, Meta didn’t take forever to respond.

Instagram version 382.0.0.49.84 is the magic number. That’s the update with the battery-saving patch. Users who’ve installed it are already reporting that their phones are back to behaving like decent smartphones again, no overheating, no sudden drops, no drama.

How to Check If You’ve Got the Fixed Version:

  1. Long-press the Instagram icon on your home screen
  2. Tap “App info”
  3. Scroll down and find the version number
  4. If it says 382.0.0.49.84 or newer, you’re safe
  5. If not, head to the Google Play Store, search for Instagram, and smash that Update button

Note: The update is still rolling out globally, so if it hasn’t shown up for you yet, give it a few days. Or keep stalking the Play Store like it’s your ex’s profile. No judgment here.
