Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Will this phone be waterproof?
Fold 7 leaks and rumours have once again raised this question – is the new Fold 7 really going to be waterproof or dustproof? Samsung is already ahead in the foldable segment in terms of IP rating, and some more improvements are expected with the new model.
Foldable Phones & Expected IP Ratings
| Model | Expected IP Rating |
| Galaxy Z Fold 7 | Minimum IP48, possibly IP58 or IP68 |
| Galaxy Z Fold 6 | IP48 |
| Galaxy Z Flip 6 | IP48 |
Expect better protection in Z Fold 7
In phones like the older model Galaxy Z Fold 6, we saw IP48 rating, which means that the phone can withstand some exposure to water. But IP58 or IP68 rating means that the device is protected well not only from water but also from dust. Till now no foldable phone has been able to achieve such a high level of dustproofing, but if Samsung does it this time, then Z Fold 7 can become the first phone in its segment which will be fully waterproof and dustproof.
Why is it difficult to increase the IP rating in foldables?
The biggest challenge for foldable phones is their design, especially the hinge area. This hinge has a lot of moving parts, which have a high chance of dust or water entering. To get full protection from solid particles, IP5X or IP6X rating is required. Phones like Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 have achieved the IP4X level, but it still does not provide full protection against dust.
What are the leaks saying about the Galaxy Z Fold 7?
All the leaks and reports that have come so far have mentioned that the Fold 7 can get “enhanced dust and water resistance”. This indicates that Samsung is trying to make the IP rating stronger this time. But nothing has been officially confirmed yet.
Is Fold 7 worth upgrading?
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is going to be a premium foldable, which will also be quite high priced. If Samsung manages to achieve IP58 or IP68 rating this time, it could be a solid reason for existing foldable users to upgrade. It is at least certain that the phone will get a minimum of IP48 rating, which already provides a strong base protection level.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to have high-end waterproofing and dustproofing. If the rumors turn out to be true, it could become the first foldable that comes with top-tier protection like IP68. But due to the hinge’s complex design, this task is not easy. For now, it will be safe to assume IP48 rating as a minimum, until an official announcement is made.
