Apple is widely expected to enter the foldable smartphone market soon, and a new leak has given a possible glimpse of what the company’s first foldable iPhone might look like. Recently shared images, believed to be based on 3D CAD rendering files, appear to reveal key elements of the device’s design.
The leaked files were shared by well-known tech tipster Sonny Dickson, who often posts early details about upcoming Apple products. The images reportedly show the design of the long-rumoured foldable iPhone, sometimes referred to online as the “iPhone Fold”.
What Will Be Different in New Look?
According to the leaked renders, the foldable iPhone could feature a camera module that resembles the design seen on the iPhone 17 Air. The back of the device appears to include a raised camera section, often called a camera plateau. However, unlike the iPhone Air model, the foldable phone is shown with two rear cameras instead of one.
The device also appears to have a slightly unusual frame design. Two of its corners look rounded, while the other two appear squared off. These squared corners may be where the hinge mechanism would be located, allowing the device to fold and unfold smoothly.
Layout of the inner display
CAD designs show the potential appearance of the open foldable iPhone. Once opened, we will be able to see a large inner display that resembles a smaller tablet device.
One of the images appears to show a small circular hole located on the inside upper left corner of the display that is likely meant for the front camera. Users will be able to take pictures of themselves or make video calls using this layout.
It appears that one of the images depicts what the phone looks like both opened and closed while viewing it from the side. It appears as though the phone has a screen on the outside that provides an easy way to see notifications and messages and to receive phone calls when closed.
CAD files hint at possible hardware design
3D CAD files are often used during the early stages of smartphone manufacturing. These files help accessory makers and manufacturers understand the exact size, shape, and placement of components before a device officially launches.
While such leaks can provide clues about a device’s design, they do not always represent the final version of the product. Companies sometimes adjust the design during development before the official announcement.
Still, the leaked images appear to match several earlier reports about Apple’s foldable device.
When could the foldable iPhone launch?
Reports about a foldable iPhone have circulated for several years. Industry analysts believe Apple has been carefully studying the foldable market before releasing its own device..
Recent rumours suggest that Apple’s foldable phone could feature a large internal screen, a secondary external display, and a redesigned hinge system to reduce the visible crease that often appears in foldable screens.
Talking about the timeline, Apple has not officially confirmed the development of a foldable iPhone. However, industry reports suggest the company may introduce the device in the coming years if testing continues successfully.
