AI Chips In 2024: Top 5 Laptops, Smartphones, And Key Hardware Milestones
Here, in this article, we will give you a recap of some of the biggest highlights of 2024 in AI chip launches and upgrades. Have a look:
1. Qualcomm, Intel, AMD Launch AI Laptop Chips:
2024 marked the arrival of modern AI laptops with built-in NPUs. Chipmakers Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD showcased their latest AI chip advancements at Computex 2024 in June. Qualcomm unveiled its Snapdragon X Elite chip for AI laptops, Intel revealed a prototype of its Lunar Lake chip, and AMD introduced its Ryzen AI 300 series. Later in the year, both AMD and Intel launched laptops powered by these chips—AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series in August and Intel’s Core Ultra 200V chips in September.
These advancements signal a major shift towards integrating AI directly into consumer laptops, improving performance and user experience.

2. NVIDIA and Intel’s AI Chips for Datacenters:
In March 2024, NVIDIA launched its Blackwell architecture, featuring the B200 GPU and Grace Blackwell GB200 superchip, boosting AI performance with 20 petaflops of compute power—four times more than its previous model. Despite early production issues, NVIDIA confirmed shipments will begin in Q4 2024.
Intel responded with the Gaudi 3 AI accelerator, offering a cost-effective, energy-efficient alternative to NVIDIA’s H100 for enterprise AI tasks.
3. Apple and Google’s Custom Chips for iPhone and Pixel:
The iPhone 16 Pro features Apple’s A18 Pro SoC with a 16-core neural engine, handling 31.6 trillion operations per second. This boosts AI features like computational photography, language translation, and AR while improving battery efficiency.
Google’s Pixel 9 series uses the Tensor G4 chip, enhancing AI tasks like real-time translation, photo editing, and personalized experiences, setting a new standard for smart devices.

4. Apple’s M4 chip launch:
Apple’s 2024 M4 chip powers the new MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and M4 Mac mini. It features a 16-core Neural Engine, providing up to 40% faster AI performance than the M3 chip. This boost speeds up tasks like image and speech recognition and improves on-device AI processing.
The M4 outperforms competitors like Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite, Intel’s Lunar Lake, and AMD’s Ryzen AI 300 series in single-core performance. However, the competition remains strong in multi-core tasks, with each chip offering unique strengths in AI and efficiency.
5. Qualcomm and MediaTek’s Enhanced AI Chips for Smartphones:
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400, launching in late 2024 and 2025, bring major AI upgrades. The Snapdragon 8 Elite features second-gen Oryon CPU cores, a powerful Adreno GPU with ray tracing, and a Hexagon NPU for advanced AI tasks. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 boasts improved ray tracing, an NPU 890, and supports real-time language translation and AI-enhanced photography. Both chips, built on TSMC’s 3-nm process, offer better AI performance and energy efficiency.
