Google Is Reportedly Building a Pixel Laptop and Bringing ‘Pixel Glow’ to Smartphones

Google may be preparing its next big hardware push, and this time, it’s not just about smartphones.

Recent reports from early Android builds suggest the company is quietly working on a Pixel-branded laptop, alongside a new visual feature called “Pixel Glow” that could soon land on phones.

According to code found in Android Canary and Android 17 Beta releases, we’re now able to see clues that something that was once referred to as orbit is on its way, with Google ultimately naming the feature Pixel Glow.

While APK teardowns don’t always guarantee a final product, they’ve historically revealed features well before launch. In this case, the consistency across multiple Android versions suggests Google is actively testing the idea.

What Is Pixel Glow?

Pixel Glow appears to be a hardware-based lighting system designed to sit on the back of a device. Its goal is simple: keep users informed without forcing them to constantly check their screens.

According to the code, the feature uses “subtle light and colour” to signal activity when the phone is placed face down.

For example, it can light up when a favourite contact calls or when there’s an important activity happening in the background.

Alongside the connection to Google Gemini, it appears that users will receive visual feedback when using the AI Assistant through Pixel Glow.

This provides users with an opportunity to use the assistant without needing to operate it through touch; they will still know that something is happening by means of the lights.

Google plans to allow users to individually customise or turn off the light feedback system.

Additionally, there is a warning for users who are sensitive to light, suggesting that the light feedback may be noticeable enough to be an issue.

Where Will the Lights Be Placed?

That’s still unclear. Early speculation points to a few possible areas, including the camera bar or even the Pixel logo itself.

Interestingly, leaked renders of upcoming Pixel devices don’t show any obvious lighting hardware.

What makes this leak more interesting is that Pixel Glow isn’t limited to smartphones. Code references suggest it’s also being developed for laptops.

There are mentions of device-type checks, along with icons hinting at a laptop implementation. While details are limited, the feature could likely provide similar visual feedback for notifications or AI interactions on larger screens.

A Pixel Laptop Might Be Coming Back

Google has previously manufactured its own computers, such as the Pixelbook and Pixelbook Go, so it would not be new if it did build another.

The Chromebook Pixel was one of the first examples of a Google computer using light to indicate battery level, which is now most likely the predecessor to Pixel Glow.

The combination of an ever-expanding Android platform and more desktop-like interfaces might make way for a potential new Pixel laptop as part of Google’s strategy to unify all products in Google’s ecosystem across all platforms and devices.

If these features make it to the final release, Google could be rethinking how users interact with their devices.
