Google is rolling out some handy updates to its document scanning tool, but there’s a catch—it’s only coming to Android users for now. According to Statcounter, Android users outnumber iOS users by about three to one, so this change will affect a big chunk of people.
Google is Upgrading Document Scanning on Android – Smarter Editing Tools
The updated scanner now lets you do a lot more after snapping a document. You’ll be able to crop and rotate pages, adjust colors with filters, and even clean up shadows. These features should make your scans look much sharper without needing extra apps.
A Cleaner Google Drive Experience
If you scan documents using the Google Drive app, you’ll also notice a refreshed interface. Google has made things look simpler and more modern. Page previews are now larger, which makes it easier to spot little imperfections before you hit save.
On top of that, new page deletion and retake buttons are built right into the scan screen, so you can fix mistakes in seconds. A thumbnail carousel has also been added, following Google’s Material 3 design principles that are shaping the look of Android and other Google apps.
More Consistent Across Google
These updates bring the scanner in line with Google’s wider redesign efforts. For example, videos stored in Google Drive now have thumbnails that look more like what you’d see on YouTube. And while Material 3 design updates may not matter much to iPhone users, the editing tools definitely would – if they arrive on iOS.
Rolling Out Now
Google says the new look and features are already rolling out. All Google Workspace accounts, including personal and business ones, should see the changes by mid-September 2025. However, Google hasn’t said whether iPhone users will get the same tools.
