In a time when online privacy concerns are growing rapidly, VPN services have become essential for users looking to secure their browsing, apps and personal data across devices. Companies are now focusing heavily on making these tools easier and faster to use in everyday life.
Mozilla has rolled out a fresh set of updates for Mozilla VPN, introducing a much-requested shortcut feature for iPhone users while also improving performance and stability across macOS and Linux.
The latest update focuses less on flashy redesigns and more on making online privacy faster, smoother and easier to manage in everyday use.
iPhone users get one-tap VPN access
There is a new Mozilla VPN iOS Control Centre shortcut as part of the software update. With the newest feature, you can now enable and disable your iOS Mozilla VPN without having to actually open the app itself.
Using new Apple widgets, the user has much quicker access to their VPN connection, which means that users who switch between networks in a single day will see a big time-saving.
The Mozilla VPN iOS Control Centre shortcut is a quality-of-life improvement to the software and solves one of the biggest issues for users using VPNs on mobile devices regarding convenience.
macOS and Linux receive important backend improvements
While iPhone users are getting the visible changes, Mozilla has also quietly pushed major under-the-hood upgrades for desktop platforms.
According to Mozilla’s official release notes on GitHub, the macOS version now includes a fully optimized VPN client after several releases focused on backend improvements.
“[macOS] Over the past few releases, we’ve improved how the VPN operates under the hood. This release completes that work,” the company said in its release notes.
Linux users are also receiving backend changes designed to simplify future software rollouts and security patches.
“[Linux] Some behind-the-scenes changes that help us get new versions out to you more easily,” the release notes added.
The improvements are expected to help Mozilla deliver updates more efficiently, particularly for open-source systems where rapid security fixes are important.
What is Mozilla VPN?
Mozilla provides a paid subscription service called Mozilla VPN for $4.99 each month. Rather than creating its own network of servers, Mozilla has created a partnership with Mullvad, a privacy-focused Swedish provider.
Through the global network of Mullvad servers located in more than 30 countries, traffic is routed through Mullvad’s servers. The encryption and security of Mozilla’s service are based on the WireGuard Protocol.
Mozilla VPN protects all incoming/outgoing traffic over the internet for ALL applications, games, etc. installed on the same device; as opposed/contrasted to using a web browser only.
Mozilla VPN is different from Firefox’s built-in VPN tool
Mozilla also clarified an important distinction that many users still confuse.
The standalone Mozilla VPN service is separate from the free VPN-style protection available inside Firefox.
Firefox’s built-in tool functions more like a browser proxy and only secures traffic within the browser itself. It is currently limited to 50GB of data monthly and is only available in select countries, including the US, UK, Germany and France.
For users looking for full-device protection and unlimited usage, Mozilla VPN remains the company’s primary premium privacy solution.
