A fresh leak suggests that iOS 27 could mark the end of several older iPhones, as Apple continues to push toward more hardware-heavy features.
Unlike some brands, Apple doesn’t officially promise a fixed number of years for software updates. Instead, support quietly ends when a device is no longer included in the latest iOS rollout. And if this leak holds true, the next cut could be significant.
Which iPhones May Lose Support?
According to a claim by tipster Instant Digital, the following models could miss out on iOS 27:
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11
- iPhone SE (2nd generation)
If that happens, only iPhones from the iPhone 12 series and newer would remain eligible for the update.
Why iOS 27 May Be Dropping Older Models
The ongoing transition to iOS 27 is strategic in its design and execution. According to news reports discussing the new version of Apple’s mobile operating system (OS) between now and late September 2026, Apple will use elements like artificial intelligence (AI) and a new user interface to enhance Siri’s capabilities.
Using these new OS features will require more powerful processors and improved hardware, which means that older devices may not be able to provide users with smooth performance when they use these types of features.
The company has undertaken a similar action once before by removing support for the iPhone XS series of smartphones through iOS 26; therefore, it makes sense for Apple to continue its trend of deprecating support for products that are more than 2 years old.
While losing software support sounds harsh, there’s a practical reason behind it.
Running heavy, modern features on ageing hardware often leads to slow performance, battery drain, and bugs. Apple’s approach leans toward keeping older devices stable on existing software rather than pushing updates that could ruin the experience.
In fact, iOS 26 already pushed limits with its more demanding design, and iOS 27 looks set to go even further.
What This Means for Users
If you are using an iPhone 11 series device or the second-generation SE, this update could be your last stop.
But it does not mean your phone will stop working. It will continue to run on its current iOS version, but it won’t receive new features or long-term security updates tied to iOS 27.
