Meta Expands Paid Subscriptions Across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp

Meta is changing how they use social media from being completely ad-based networks to primarily being subscription-based. The company will be implementing new monthly fee structures, the “Plus” plan for their Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp platforms.

With this latest initiative, Meta is sending a clear signal that they are serious about diversifying their sources of revenue beyond just advertising and looking to establish an entirely different model, one that is based on subscriptions to their ecosystem of social networks.

The plan will enable users to subscribe to Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus, and WhatsApp Plus for a small monthly fee.

The company is also planning to launch a larger umbrella subscription service called “Meta One,” which will eventually encompass all of Meta’s initiatives in AI and their businesses geared toward content creators and end-users.

What users will get with Meta’s new ‘Plus’ plans

The newly launched consumer subscriptions focus primarily on customization, audience tools, and additional engagement features.

Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus are both priced at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus starts at $2.99 monthly.

Meta says the plans are designed for users who want more control over personalization and audience engagement across the apps.

New Features On Instagram Plus & Facebook Plus

On Instagram, subscribers gain access to features such as:

  • Story rewatch insights
  • Unlimited audience lists beyond Close Friends
  • Story spotlight boosts once a week
  • Extended Stories lasting longer than 24 hours
  • Story previews without appearing in viewer lists
  • Searchable Story viewer lists
  • Custom app icons
  • Profile font customization
  • Extra profile pins
  • Animated “Super Heart” reactions

Some features appear directly targeted at creators and power users trying to better understand engagement and grow audiences.

One notable addition allows users to post directly to their profile highlights without pushing the content into followers’ feeds.

WhatsApp Plus Features

WhatsApp Plus, meanwhile, takes a different approach. The messaging platform’s subscription focuses more heavily on personalization features, including:

  • App themes
  • Custom ringtones
  • Additional pinned chats
  • Expanded list customization
  • Premium stickers

Meta says additional features will continue rolling out over time.

What is Meta One?

Meta’s latest release announcement included an additional, larger initiative called “Meta One.”

This new label will ultimately become the main repository for all of Meta’s subscription products.

The rollout is indicative of a larger tech industry trend where developing platforms develop subscription tiers to complement their ad revenue.

From a strategic perspective, the timing for Meta is excellent. As Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp already reach a global audience in the billions, there are few opportunities to grow exponentially in terms of users. Subscription products create new avenues for increased revenue efficiency through an existing user base.

Meta AI subscriptions

Meta is also entering the rapidly growing premium AI subscription market.

The company confirmed that it will soon begin testing two Meta AI plans:

  • Meta One Plus – $7.99/month
  • Meta One Premium – $19.99/month

Both plans will offer expanded access to Meta AI tools, but the Premium tier will unlock higher-capacity computing for more advanced AI tasks.

According to Meta, premium users will gain access to deeper reasoning capabilities, enhanced thinking mode, more advanced image generation and a higher usage limit.

The AI subscriptions will initially begin testing next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia.

Meta also said future AI subscription benefits could expand into its smart glasses ecosystem.

Meta’s Plan for Businesses and Creators

Beyond consumer and AI subscriptions, Meta is also preparing professional plans aimed at creators and businesses.

These tests will begin later this week in select markets, including Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.

The first tier, called Meta One Essential, will cost $14.99 per month and include:

  • Verified badges
  • Impersonation protection
  • Expanded profile linksheets
  • Enhanced online identity tools

A more expensive Meta One Advanced tier priced at $49.99 per month will include:

  • Higher visibility in Facebook and Instagram search
  • Featured placement in Facebook feeds
  • Enhanced “Follow” buttons on Reels
  • Automatic follow invitations
  • Website and shop traffic tools
  • Advanced audience analytics
  • Content reuse alerts
  • Shared account moderation tools

The company is clearly positioning these plans toward creators, influencers, brands, and businesses looking to expand reach inside Meta’s ecosystem.

Meta has been heavily focused on advertising for years, and that will continue indefinitely; however, the company is now looking into developing monetisation models using premium tiers for nearly all major products that it provides.
