If you use Instagram’s direct messaging feature like any other messaging app, the news of a recent change regarding direct message encryption should probably catch your attention.
Starting on May 8, 2026, Meta Platforms will no longer offer end-to-end encryption support for Instagram direct messaging.
This means that the conversations you have will not remain as private as previously stated.
To put it simply, the content of your Instagram chats is now accessible and can be reviewed by Meta to detect harmful behaviours, including scams, harassment, and child exploitation.
However, for many users, the more pressing issue is privacy. Once end-to-end encryption is removed, there are no methods available to you or the individual you are conversing with that allow either of you to keep your message private.
What end-to-end encryption actually did
End-to-end encryption is a security feature that ensures only the sender and receiver can read a message.
Not even the platform itself can access the content.
Apps like WhatsApp and Signal Messenger still use this system for private communication.
Instagram introduced optional encrypted chats back in 2019, though the feature was never enabled by default for most users.
Now, that option is being removed entirely.
As a result, ongoing and future conversations on Instagram are no longer protected under end-to-end encryption.
Why Meta says it removed encryption
According to Meta, encrypted Instagram chats had low adoption among users.
The company also argued that strong encryption made it harder to detect illegal or harmful behaviour happening inside private conversations.
Meta claims the change will help improve moderation systems and online safety enforcement.
However, privacy advocates have raised concerns for years about large tech companies gaining more access to personal communication data.
That is especially important now as AI systems increasingly analyse user activity across platforms.
Can Meta read your Instagram messages now?
Yes, Meta can view message content for moderation purposes (moderation) as well as to implement automated safety checks (automated).
While Meta has indicated that it does not read everyone’s chats manually, the absence of encryption means your conversation may be read by their automated systems and processed/analysed accordingly.
This raises concern about data collection, AI/Ad target training, automated content scanning, and policy change down the road.
For everyday users, this change probably won’t make that much of a difference immediately.
However, for individuals communicating with a high degree of personal, work-related, financial, and other sensitive information, the privacy aspect of what’s changing dramatically and therefore a person’s perspective on what that means for them.
How to make your Instagram chats safer
If you still plan to use Instagram messaging, there are a few ways to reduce privacy risks.
- Avoid sharing sensitive information
- Turn on disappearing messages carefully
- Review Instagram privacy settings
- Download your existing Instagram chat history
- Consider switching to encrypted apps
For years, many users casually treated Instagram DMs like a private texting app.
But this update changes that perception significantly.
The platform is now moving further toward moderation-driven communication where conversations can be analysed for safety systems, AI processing and policy enforcement.
