The company has issued a clear warning that charging your phone overnight can lead to fire hazards, electric shocks, injuries or damage if it is not done safely. The risk increases if the phone is covered or doesn’t have enough airflow while charging.
Why charging in bed can be dangerous:
Apple says placing your iPhone under a pillow, blanket, or duvet is especially unsafe. When a device can’t release heat properly, it may overheat, which in extreme cases could even cause a fire. Charging on soft surfaces that trap heat is something Apple strongly advises against.
The hidden risk of third-party chargers:
Apple has also highlighted concerns around non-certified charging accessories. Using third-party chargers can raise the risk of fire if they don’t meet safety requirements. While some third-party products are fine, others may not be built to proper standards.
The company recommends sticking to certified accessories and specifically suggests using ‘Made for iPhone’ cables to help ensure safe charging. According to Apple, uncertified chargers could be far more dangerous than people realise.

Only use certified and compliant accessories:
Apple warns that only ‘Made for iPhone‘ or certified USB-compliant chargers that meet strict safety standards should be used. The company adds that unsafe adapters could lead to serious injury or even death, making the choice of charger more important than it might seem.
Extra safety tips from Apple:
In addition to choosing the right accessories, Apple urges users to never charge their iPhone near water or liquids. Chargers that are damaged, frayed or no longer working properly should be thrown away immediately to avoid potential hazards.
Charging safely might take a little extra thought, but Apple says these simple steps can make a big difference in protecting both your device and yourself.
