Google Eyes Laptop Comeback With New Android-Based ‘Googlebook’ Platform

After years of staying relatively quiet in the premium laptop space, Google is preparing a major comeback and this time, artificial intelligence is at the centre of everything.

The company has officially revealed plans for a new Android-powered laptop platform being referred to as “Googlebook,” a fresh attempt to reshape the future of laptops by combining Android, AI, and premium hardware into one ecosystem.

Unlike traditional Chromebooks, these new devices are expected to target higher-end users looking for stronger performance, smarter AI tools, and more modern hardware experiences.

Google Wants Gemini AI Built Into Your Laptop

Google’s future focus is on developing Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) features. The new laptops will be extremely integrated into the operating system, meaning the user will have a more built-in experience with AI than they do with many current Windows and Mac computers.

The other feature Google has announced is called the “Magic Pointer”. This turns your laptop cursor into an intelligent assistant that will provide contextually aware assistance.

According to Google, the Magic Pointer will be “smart enough” to understand when content on the screen would benefit from Gemini and then automatically provide appropriate suggestions.

Furthermore, when Gemini is not being used or is not helping you, the technology will “quietly” drop to the background to avoid intrusive experiences that users have reported having lately due to excessive use of AI.

Google is positioning Google Books as a blend between Android and ChromeOS, the software traditionally used for Chromebooks.

Chromebooks became extremely popular in schools and among budget users because of their simplicity and low pricing. But they were often criticised for limited power and weak premium appeal.

Google Books appears designed to change that image completely.

The company says these devices will feature significantly better hardware and performance than standard Chromebooks, pushing them closer to premium Windows laptops and Apple’s MacBook lineup.

Every Googlebook laptop will also include a signature “Glowbar,” a lighting feature that illuminates when the device powers on.

Dell, Lenovo, HP, ASUS, and Acer Are Already Onboard

Google is not building the ecosystem alone.

Major laptop brands already confirmed to be working on Googlebook devices include:

  • Dell Technologies
  • Lenovo
  • HP
  • ASUS
  • Acer

The first models are expected to launch in the coming months, with Google promising more details later this year.

Interestingly, Google has not confirmed whether it plans to launch its own branded Googlebook device.

The company’s last self-made laptop was the Pixelbook Go, released back in 2019.

Google Is Chasing a Growing Laptop Trend

Google’s timing is not random.

The laptop market is increasingly shifting toward lightweight premium devices sitting somewhere between budget laptops and ultra-expensive flagship machines.

Earlier this year, Apple reportedly saw strong sales momentum after introducing the more affordable MacBook Neo lineup.

Now Google appears ready to target the same space with AI-focused Android laptops.

“There is an opportunity to bring more innovation back to laptops, especially at the higher end,” said Sameer Samat, who oversees Google’s Android ecosystem.

He also hinted that Google believes AI integration on laptops still has massive untapped potential.

The launch of Google Books signals something bigger than just another laptop platform.

For years, Android dominated smartphones while ChromeOS handled Google’s laptop strategy separately. But the company now seems ready to merge those worlds around AI.

If successful, Google Books could become Google’s strongest challenge yet to both Windows laptops and Apple’s MacBook ecosystem.
