Google’s Brewing Up Material Design 3 For I/O 2025: Google caused quite a stir four years ago at its annual developer conclave called I/O, where it unveiled Material You design for Android 12. Although apps and system elements took a year to adapt, this update introduced dynamic theming.

As Google I/O 2025 approaches, the Android libraries related to theming components are already indicating significant modifications that will likely be made in the near future, which Google hopes will make apps more “expressive.”

The only constant in Android UI design is evolution, as demonstrated by the introduction of Material Design four years ago. It has undergone three updates, the most recent of which is simply referred to as Material Design 3, or MD3.

Apex Android researcher Mishaal Rahman recently shared on Android Authority that there is enough code evidence to indicate that a new MD version known internally as Material Design 3 Expressive is on the way.

Google is working on Material Design 3 Expressive

According to a number of code snippets found by tech fans, Google is working on Material Design 3 Expressive in preparation for its formal launch at Google I/O 2025.

Among these findings are mentions of “I/O 2025 Expressive talk code demos” and “lo talk” in the source code and developer libraries for Android that are kept on GitHub.

While staying within the Material Design 3 framework, the “Expressive” suffix suggests that additional dynamic and captivating aspects will be included to improve user interactions. This strategy is consistent with Google’s past practice of developing its design language through improvements rather than total redesigns.

Beta versions of Android 16 have already revealed some visual enhancements

Beta versions of Android 16 have already revealed some visual enhancements that may be part of this design evolution:

  • Reorganized settings menu featuring intuitive tile layouts
  • New button states with checkmarks and crosses to indicate option status clearly
  • Refined animations that provide better visual feedback
  • More expressive color implementations beyond the current Material You system
  • Enhanced visual hierarchy to improve navigation and usability

Together, these components point to a design strategy that emphasizes user engagement, visual clarity, and an effective information hierarchy, all characteristics of well-considered UX design that enhance everyday interactions with Android devices.

Given that Google I/O is scheduled to start on May 20, the wait won’t be too lengthy

It may take months before these expressive features are integrated into the app code for the average user; this is really a rerun of support for Material Design icons. Additionally, don’t get your hopes up by associating this change with the impending release of Android 16.
