OpenAI is taking ChatGPT far beyond its role as a simple chatbot. The company’s latest update transforms it into something much bigger – a conversational app store, where users can interact with third-party apps directly through chat. This move could completely change the way people use ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Becomes a Hub for Apps
ChatGPT has been gradually getting smarter and more proactive in how it responds to user requests. Now, thanks to integration with popular third-party services like Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow, you can get things done without ever leaving the chat.
For example, you could ask ChatGPT to create a Spotify playlist or help write a real estate listing for Zillow, and it will handle the process right inside the conversation. You don’t even have to name the app – just describe what you want to do. If you mention planning a trip, ChatGPT might automatically suggest using Expedia or Booking.com. Ask about designing a logo, and Figma could pop up as part of the response.
In this new setup, ChatGPT becomes more like a command center, turning your requests into real-world actions instantly. The apps come to you, rather than you having to search for and open them yourself.

A New Kind of App Store
The concept is being compared to the early days of the Apple App Store, but there’s a key difference. On a smartphone, you still need to open an app to use it. With ChatGPT apps, you don’t have to do that – the app joins your chat automatically when it’s relevant to what you’re doing.
Of course, this shift is also a strategic move for OpenAI. By turning ChatGPT into a full platform, OpenAI gains control over the interface and, potentially, the new app ecosystem within it. Just as Google dominates search and Apple oversees mobile apps, OpenAI could soon determine which apps appear inside ChatGPT, how they’re ranked, and how developers make their work discoverable.
Introducing ChatGPT OS
The new feature, often referred to as ChatGPT OS, starts rolling out today for all ChatGPT users outside the EU, with plans to expand globally later. OpenAI also confirmed that more third-party apps will be added over time, and developers can already start creating their own using the company’s new SDK.
While OpenAI hasn’t yet shared details on how developers will earn revenue from this ecosystem, it’s clear that a monetization model will be part of the plan.
How ChatGPT Apps Work
From a user’s perspective, using these apps feels less like installing software and more like inviting a helpful guest into your chat. The first time you try a new app, ChatGPT will ask for permission, explain what data it will share, and prompt you to connect your accounts if needed. Once linked, these apps can interact with you in real time, providing personalized help based on your conversation.
The Future of AI as a Platform
If OpenAI’s vision comes to life, this could mark a major turning point for artificial intelligence, where AI shifts from being just a service to becoming a digital storefront. ChatGPT won’t just answer questions anymore. It’ll help you do things, connecting you seamlessly with the tools and services you already use.
