7 Cutting-Edge AI Apps Worth Your Time

In the early Internet days, shareware let you try apps for free and pay later if you liked them. Now, new AI apps are constantly popping up, doing things you might have imagined. Some of these apps require subscriptions, but many are still free, for now, so you can try them out before their creators decide how to charge for them.
7 Cutting-Edge AI Apps Worth Your Time
Google GenCast:
Google’s GenCast AI, trained on 40 years of weather data, predicts events like outdoor wedding conditions by refining forecasts over time. While not an app yet, its open-source code is available to build your own.
OpenAI Sora Turbo:
Released in December 2024, Soro Turbo uses AI to create videos from text, images, or other videos. It’s faster and has a better interface than the original Soro. A ChatGPT Plus ($20/month) subscription lets you make 720p videos, while Pro ($200/month) offers 1080p output.
Google Gemini 2:
In December, Google launched Gemini 2, an updated generative AI chatbot. Like others, it answers questions and creates text or images, but only the Advanced version ($20/month) allows image creation with people or AI agent features to perform tasks independently.
The Browser Company Dia:
Dia is a new browser from The Browser Company set to debut in early 2025. It features predictive text for follow-up queries and can act as an AI agent, handling tasks like researching and emailing results.
Alexa Plus:
Leaked in August 2024, Amazon’s Alexa Plus is expected to launch soon, costing $5–$10/month. It offers news summaries, recipe searches, a kid-friendly chatbot, and the ability to hold conversations, so you don’t have to talk to yourself!
Apple Intelligence:
Apple Intelligence, built into iOS for Macs, iPhones, and iPads, enhances apps like Mail, Notes, Messages, and Photos. It summarizes emails, transcribes audio, cleans up images, and refines text. Siri now supports more natural conversations. The December 2024 update adds Image Playground (AI image generation), an emoji creator, and visual intelligence for location info and sign translations.
Google Scam Detection
Scam calls have made landlines and even mobile phones frustrating to use. To combat this, Google’s Pixel phones, and soon other Android devices, offer a beta Scam Detection feature. This AI tool identifies scam-like conversation patterns to filter out junk calls.
