Search Feature Just Got Smarter And Surprisingly Fast

Google launched its Ask Photos feature last year which was supposed to give a photo search experience using Gemini AI. But when this feature reached the public, the response was not as strong as expected. Many people only wanted to find photos of their pet, car or some vacation, but Ask Photos was so slow that people started avoiding it.

Google noticed this problem and that’s why the company paused the rollout of this feature for some time. A product manager also accepted that the latency, quality and overall user experience were not as good as they should have been. But now, Google has upgraded this feature and started rolling it out again.

Ask Photos is the new upgraded search tool of Google Photos which combines Gemini AI and classic search. Now you can type detailed prompts like, “show all the photos from 2012 when I had short haircut” or “find photos of my old van at the beach.” Gemini AI understands what you say and finds the relevant images from your photo library.

But earlier, when people used to search with simple words like “cat,” “nature,” or “bike,” results used to come late. Now Google has fixed this issue. You now get photos instantly even with short search terms, like you used to in classic search.

Not just basic search, Google has also made complex searches faster. If you say, “all the Paris trip photos with both kids together,” now Gemini AI shows you the exact results more quickly.

How to Use the Updated Version of Ask Photos

Google said that this updated Ask Photos feature is now reaching more users, but for now, it is only available for users in the United States.

If you want to use this feature, you need to complete a few requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older.

  • Your location must be in the US.

  • Your Google account language setting must be “English (United States).”

  • The Face Groups feature in your Google Photos must be enabled.

If you meet all these criteria, then you just have to wait until Google rolls out this update to your account. Until then, you can continue using the classic photo search.

Google has finally upgraded its Ask Photos feature which is now providing a photo search experience with much better speed and accuracy. The combination of Gemini AI and Google’s classic tools now feels smoother. But this feature is still available only to limited users, so if you are eligible, you may get this feature soon.
