Use an iPhone to Reset Passcode Temporarily
In iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or later, use your old passcode for temporary access.
Handling “Device Unavailable” or “Security Lockout” Alerts
If you enter the wrong passcode too many times, your iPhone gets disabled. Use a computer to enter recovery mode, erase your device, and set it up again. You’ll need your Apple ID and password for this process. After erasing, you can restore data from a backup or set up as a new device if no backup is available.
Step 1: Get a Computer Ready
You’ll need a Mac or PC with Windows 10 or later. Ensure the Apple Devices app or iTunes is installed. Use the cable that came with your iPhone or a compatible one to connect to the computer. If you don’t have a computer, visit an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Step 2: Turn Off Your iPhone
Unplug your iPhone if it’s connected to the computer. Turn it off using the appropriate method for your model:
- iPhone 8 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen): Press and hold the side and Volume down buttons until the power off slider appears.
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Press and hold the side button until the power off slider appears.
- iPhone SE (1st gen) and earlier: Press and hold the top button until the power off slider appears.
Drag the slider to turn off your iPhone and wait a minute to ensure it’s off.
Step 3: Enter Recovery Mode
Find the button you need to hold for your iPhone model:
- iPhone 8 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen): Use the side button.
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus: Use the Volume down button.
- iPhone SE (1st gen) and earlier: Use the Home button.
Hold the correct button while connecting your iPhone to the computer. Keep holding until the Apple logo appears and then change to an image of a computer and cable. If the passcode screen appears, turn off your iPhone and try again.
Step 4: Restore Your iPhone
Locate your iPhone in the Finder, iTunes, or the Apple Devices app on a PC. Choose Restore when prompted. If the download takes over 15 minutes and your device exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then restart your iPhone and try again.
Once the process finishes, your device will restart to a setup screen. Disconnect from the computer and set up your iPhone as new or restore from a backup.
