Google’s Big Gemini Update Is Now Live - What’s Changing For Users

Artificial intelligence tools are becoming a much bigger part of everyday apps and services, with companies like Google now pushing advanced AI subscriptions for productivity, research, and content creation.

Google has been aggressively expanding its Gemini AI ecosystem, especially after integrating it across Android devices, Google Workspace, and Pixel smartphones.

Now, Google has announced major changes to its Gemini subscription plans following updates revealed during Google I/O 2026 and not all users are happy about them.

Google AI Pro Users Are Getting New Usage Limits

During this occasion, Google primarily revealed its new AI Ultra service, which has a monthly cost of $100, while also making an immediate shift to existing Google AI Pro users.

According to communications made via email to users, Google has now imposed limits based on computational usage for the Google AI Pro service as opposed to unlimited use of the service.

As such, the Google AI Pro service will operate on a limit based upon several variable factors such as prompt complexity, features utilized, and the total length of time of conversation.

These limits will be refreshed every five hours and accrue toward a weekly limit of the same type of limit.

How The New Gemini Limits Work

Google states that the AI Pro plan now offers four times the usage limit available on the free Gemini tier.

Meanwhile, the new Gemini AI Ultra subscription reportedly provides five times the limit of the free version. The changes also affect tools like Flow and Antigravity, which previously included 1,000 AI credits under the AI Pro plan.

Those bundled AI credits are no longer included by default, though users can still purchase additional credits separately if needed.

Users Can Now Track Their AI Usage

Google has also introduced a new section called “Usage Limits” in both the Gemini app and its web version.

With the added feature, users are now able to view their total consumption of AI credits, when their usage is reset, and how many credits they have remaining in their weekly cap.

The enhancements are especially relevant to Google Pixel users, as almost all of the latest Pixel devices include an introductory free trial for the AI Pro subscription.

Reddit Users Are Already Criticizing The Changes

The reaction online has been mixed, with many users on Reddit criticizing the updated limits.

Some users reportedly claim the AI Pro subscription now feels significantly less valuable, especially for tasks like AI video generation that consume higher compute resources.

Others suggested that switching to competing AI platforms like Anthropic and its Claude chatbot may now seem more appealing.

Google Is Betting Big On Premium AI Features

As part of Google’s annual conference, they presented new features of Gemini 2, which was created to be an all-day assistant named Gemini Spark.

Gemini Spark runs as an AI assistant that can perform many different functions constantly (24 hours per day) and manage other tasks throughout its lifetime.

Not the first time we’ve heard about this type of plan; Google is only allowing AI Ultra subscribers to test some of these advanced features during their beta trial period.

AI Ultra subscribers will pay $100 per month to have access to these services. You can tell AI Ultra plans are geared towards people who need more power from AI, businesses that rely heavily on AI, and people who are avid users of AI, as opposed to an average user.

Although Google hasn’t removed access to Gemini’s core AI models or storage benefits, the new compute-based system changes how freely subscribers can use those tools.

For regular users, the update may simply mean monitoring AI usage more carefully. But for advanced users relying heavily on AI-generated videos, research, or large-scale workflows, the new restrictions could make subscription choices far more important going forward.
