OpenAI Cracks Down on China, Bans Accounts for Social Media Monitoring
OpenAI has banned multiple accounts linked to China over unauthorized surveillance using AI models for social media monitoring, raising concerns about data misuse.

OpenAI crackdown on China, ban on many accounts, they were doing this work secretly
After the uproar in America due to the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek, the strictness of American companies on China is not stopping. Now a new action has been taken by OpenAI. OpenAI has banned many accounts related to China. The company’s threat intelligence report revealed that these accounts were involved in activities related to social media monitoring.
Why was this step taken?
According to the report, these accounts were generating descriptions for a social media listening tool. It has been claimed that this tool was being used to prepare real-time reports of protests taking place in Western countries and send them to Chinese security agencies.
“These operators used our models to check whether their insights extended to Chinese embassies and intelligence agencies. This surveillance was taking place in several countries, including the US, Germany, and the UK,” OpenAI said.
What was the purpose of these accounts?
The investigation also revealed that users were also using OpenAI’s model in debugging the code for this tool. Although this tool was based on another AI model, its use was violating OpenAI’s policy.
OpenAI said the company’s guidelines prohibit the use of AI for any type of unauthorized surveillance, communications surveillance, or suppression of personal freedoms.
