Huawei FreeBuds 6 Review: Audiophile Sound, Amateur Silence

Huawei FreeBuds 6 bring big sound in a familiar shape with dual drivers, lossless audio, and improved battery life. But ANC? Still playing catch-up. Full review here.

Huawei FreeBuds 6 Review: Huawei’s back with another pair of earbuds that look suspiciously familiar but don’t let the silhouette fool you. The FreeBuds 6 are packing serious sonic firepower under that refined exterior. Think of it as a quiet nerd who suddenly starts shredding guitar solos in the school assembly.

Huawei FreeBuds 6 Review

Audiophile Soul, Open-Ear Shell

Let’s get the headline act out of the way, sound quality has leveled up. The dual-driver setup is the real hero here: you get an 11 mm dynamic bass driver paired with a planar diaphragm tweeter. The result? A frequency range stretching from 14 Hz to 48 kHz, giving your ears a five-star meal of deep lows and sparkling highs.

It doesn’t stop there. Huawei throws in Bass Turbo 2.0 and triple adaptive EQ tuning, all packed into a smart open-fit design. The three-part internal structure works hard to balance the soundstage even though the buds aren’t sealed inside your ear.

And yes, for the first time, Huawei’s open-fit buds support 2.3 Mbps lossless audio via L2HC 4.0 codec (if you’re rocking EMUI 15+ or using the Huawei Audio app on a compatible Samsung/Huawei device). Wireless audiophile audio check.

ANC Tries, But Doesn’t Triumph

Here’s where the mood dims a bit. Despite all the AI-fueled, three-mic, VPU-enhanced ANC wizardry, the FreeBuds 6 still struggle to shut out the world. I tested them on a train commute, and let’s just say, cabin noise- 1, FreeBuds 6- 0.

It’s not that they don’t try. The buds now feature advanced open-fit ANC that promises to block noise up to 95 dB, and even battle wind up to 8 m/s. But the open-fit design inherently limits what the ANC can do. It’s like trying to hush a party through a window, you can still hear the beat thumping.

Design Tweaks That Matter

The good news? They’re more comfortable now. 9% lighter, 12% sleeker, and shorter stems mean you can jog, nod, or awkwardly dance in your chair without them flying off.

Call quality? Still under review, but with three microphones and a dedicated VPU, they’ve got the hardware to be solid. I’ll test that in the next Zoom marathon.

Battery Life & Charging: Small Buds, Big Juice

Battery life gets a neat bump too, 6 hours per bud (ANC off) and 36 hours total with the case. That’s an upgrade from the previous 5+30 hour setup. Need juice fast? A quick 5-minute charge gives 2.5 hours of playback. Also, shoutout to USB-C and wireless charging for keeping things modern.

Verdict: Better Sound, Same Silence Struggles

So here’s the takeaway. The FreeBuds 6 sound fantastic, even without Huawei gear. I paired them with iPhone 16 Pro and was genuinely surprised by the richness, clarity, and balance, especially on ambient and instrumental tracks. It’s a true upgrade for audiophiles on the go.

But ANC still hasn’t caught up to the competition. If you’re hoping to drown out office chatter or crying babies mid-flight, you might be disappointed. Huawei’s open-fit ANC tech is clever, but the physics of an unsealed ear canal remain the Achilles heel.

Still, if sound quality and comfort are your top priorities, and you’re okay turning the volume up instead of tuning the world out, these are absolutely worth a listen.
