As more daily activities move to smartphones, online privacy has become increasingly important. Every time you open a website, your phone uses the Domain Name System (DNS) to translate the web address into a numerical IP address so it can load the page.

By default, these DNS requests may not always be encrypted. This can allow internet service providers, public Wi-Fi networks, or even attackers to see which websites you are trying to access. Enabling private DNS adds encryption to these requests, offering an extra layer of protection.

Although the iPhone does not use the exact term “Private DNS” in its settings, there are several ways to secure DNS traffic.

What Is Private DNS?

Private DNS encrypts your DNS requests using secure protocols. This prevents outsiders from easily monitoring which websites you visit.

It does not change your browsing history or block all forms of tracking, but it reduces certain privacy risks and makes passive monitoring more difficult.

Method 1: Enable iCloud Private Relay

If you subscribe to iCloud+, you can turn on Private Relay.

To activate it:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your Apple ID at the top
  3. Select iCloud
  4. Tap Private Relay and switch it on

Private Relay hides your IP address and encrypts Safari browsing traffic. It adds an extra layer of privacy, especially when connected to public networks.

Method 2: Change DNS Settings for Wi-Fi

You can manually set encrypted DNS servers for a specific Wi-Fi network:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Wi-Fi
  3. Select your connected network
  4. Tap Configure DNS
  5. Choose Manual and enter secure DNS server details from a trusted provider

Why is DNS Is Important?

1. Reduces Security Risks

Unencrypted DNS requests can be intercepted or redirected. Private DNS lowers this risk and helps protect your device from certain attacks.

2. Limits Tracking

Some tracking methods rely on DNS data to build user profiles. Encrypting DNS reduces the visibility of your browsing habits.

3. Blocks Harmful Websites

Some secure DNS providers include threat filtering. They can block known phishing or malware sites before they load.

4. No Noticeable Slowdown

Modern encrypted DNS systems are efficient. Most users will not notice any difference in speed.

5. Easy to Adjust

Private DNS settings can be changed or removed at any time, giving you full control.

Private DNS is only one layer of digital protection. It works best when combined with strong passwords, two-factor authentication, updated software, and cautious online behaviour.
