Apple recently introduced new MacBook Pro models powered by its latest M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. These laptops are already available for pre-order and are expected to reach stores on March 11. However, reports suggest that Apple may already be preparing an even bigger upgrade for the MacBook Pro lineup later this year.

According to recent industry reports, Apple could be working on a higher-end MacBook that may arrive with several new hardware features, including a touchscreen display and OLED technology. Some observers believe this device could be positioned above the current MacBook Pro models and might even carry a new name such as “MacBook Ultra.”

A major display upgrade could be coming

The new Apple MacBook is expected to have a new display. They probably will have an OLED display, which means that it can produce black and white images with greater depth than traditional LCD displays. This means you will see more vibrant colours and greater contrast on the screen.

The company may also add a touchscreen feature to the new MacBook. If they do this, it will be Apple’s first Mac computer with a touchscreen display; currently, there are only touch-enabled devices available, such as the iPad Pro, which rely on the keyboard or mouse for input.

Touchscreen functionality may change the way users interact with the Mac

Powered by the next generation of Apple chips

The rumoured device is also expected to run on Apple’s next-generation processors, possibly the M6 Pro or M6 Max chips. These chips would succeed the recently announced M5 Pro and M5 Max processors and could bring improvements in performance and power efficiency.

Apple has a history of regularly updating its Mac lineup with new versions of its in-house chips. These processors are designed to handle demanding tasks such as video editing, software development, and advanced graphics work.

A new model above the MacBook Pro?

According to recent media reports, the brand new machine may not actually take the place of the MacBook Pro notebooks introduced earlier this week; rather, it may fit into a position above them in the product hierarchy that offers more features than today’s version.

The addition of OLED screen technology and touch-sensitive display will certainly add to the production costs of the machine, so Apple may want to position it as a high-end choice for those who want the best (most capable) Mac available and are willing to spend significantly more money to get what they want.

A few analysts predict that Apple could come up with an entirely new name, perhaps something like “MacBook Ultra’, to provide an unambiguous indication of its status within the MacBook product line (i.e., as a high-end model).

Apple has released multiple MacBook updates in one year before

Although it may sound unusual for Apple to release another MacBook upgrade so soon, the company has done something similar in the past.

In 2023, it introduced the M2 Pro and M2 Max versions of the MacBook Pro in January. Later that same year, it launched updated models with M3 Pro and M3 Max chips in October.

This shows that Apple is willing to release multiple upgrades within the same year when new technology is ready.

When Will It Be Launched?

Reports indicate that the next high-end MacBook could arrive toward the end of the year, possibly between November and December. Apple has previously announced some Mac computers earlier in the year and released them in December, including models like the Mac Pro and the iMac Pro.

However, development timelines can change, and there is always a chance that the launch could be pushed further into the future if the device is not ready.
