Most of us take our smartwatch off before bed. It’s bulky on the wrist, the screen glows at the wrong moment, and honestly, a full-sized watch is not that comfortable to sleep in. Garmin seems to have picked up on this exact problem.

Instead of asking people to sleep in a watch, the company has launched a device built to do just one job extremely well: track your sleep. The new device is called the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor, and unlike Garmin’s usual smartwatches that try to do everything, this one has a single purpose.

It is designed purely for the hours you spend in bed, giving you a clearer picture of how well you actually slept and how recovered your body is the next morning.

What Is the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor?

The Index Sleep Monitor is a lightweight, screenless smart band that you wear on your upper arm, not your wrist, while you sleep.

Garmin officially announced it in June 2025, describing it as an ‘ultra-comfortable’ sleep band built to give users a fuller picture of their overall fitness and recovery, not just their workouts.

The idea is that you already get activity and workout data from your Garmin watch during the day, but many people don’t wear that same watch to bed, so this band exists to fill that gap, so that you get a complete 24-hour view of your health instead of a partial one.

Design

Comfort is clearly the biggest design priority here. The band has no screen at all, so there is nothing to glow, buzz with notifications, or dig into your skin while you are trying to fall asleep.

It simply sits on your upper arm and quietly collects data through the night.

Garmin has also made hygiene genuinely easy, which is good for something worn every single night. The sensor module can be popped out, and the fabric band itself is machine washable on a gentle cycle.

It comes in Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large sizes,  so it should comfortably fit most arm sizes.

Key Features

This is where the Index Sleep Monitor earns its name. Throughout the night, it tracks a set of metrics, all of which sync automatically to the Garmin Connect app the next morning:

  • Sleep Score: A simple 0-100 score every morning based on your sleep duration, stress levels, and how much time you spent in each sleep stage.
  • Sleep Stages: A breakdown of your light, deep, and REM sleep, along with when each stage happened during the night.
  • HRV Status: Your heart rate variability, shown as balanced, unbalanced, low, or poor. After a few nights of use, it builds a personal baseline so the readings mean something specific to your body, not just a generic average.
  • Pulse Ox: Continuous blood oxygen tracking through the night.
  • Breathing Variations and Respiration Rate: Used alongside Pulse Ox data to flag unusual shifts in your breathing while asleep.
  • Skin Temperature: Tracks changes that can be linked to your activity levels, room temperature, or even early signs of illness.
  • Body Battery Energy Monitoring: Garmin’s well-known energy-tracking feature, showing whether your body is charged up or needs more rest. If you also wear a compatible Garmin watch during the day, you get one continuous energy graph covering your whole day and night.
  • Stress Tracking: Tells you whether your night was calm, balanced, or stressful.
  • Women’s Health Tracking: Using skin temperature data, the band can improve period predictions and estimate past ovulation, along with general menstrual cycle and pregnancy tracking support in the Connect app.

There is also a smart wake alarm, which is a genuinely thoughtful feature. Instead of jolting you awake at a fixed time, it watches for a lighter stage of sleep within a window you set and wakes you with a gentle vibration, so you wake up feeling less sleepy.

Battery life is rated at up to 7 nights on a single charge, which is a solid figure for a device that is essentially working around the clock.

Price and Availability

The Garmin Index Sleep Monitor became available in June 2025 for $169.99 in the US, with international pricing around GBP 149.99 in the UK and  EUR 169.99 in Europe.

It is sold directly through Garmin’s website as well as select retailers, and unlike some sleep and fitness bands on the market, it does not require a monthly subscription to unlock its full set of features.

Should You Buy It?

This band makes sense if you already own a Garmin watch but skip wearing it at night, and you want proper sleep and recovery data without paying for a subscription. It is also great for anyone who cares more about sleep quality and stress than daily step counts.

It is not for you if you want one device that tracks both workouts and sleep, since this band has no activity tracking at all.

In that case, a full Garmin smartwatch or the Cirqa Smart Band is a better fit. And remember, it is not a medical device, so it should not be used to diagnose any health condition.

In short, this is a smart add-on for existing Garmin users, not a standalone gadget for someone starting fresh.
