Amazon’s MGM Studios division has secured a deal for Esports content

While one arm of Amazon scales down its esports initiatives, another is actively investing in the sector.

MGM Alternative, a branch of Amazon’s MGM Studios specializing in unscripted programs such as The Voice, Survivor, and Shark Tank, has formed an extensive content partnership with the Global Esports Federation (GEF).

As part of the agreement, MGM will produce content related to the Global Esports Games, esports athletes, and the gaming lifestyle. This collaboration encompasses both traditional broadcast and streaming content, along with participation in GEF events.

Barry Poznick, the general manager of MGM Alternative, expressed enthusiasm about the surging global interest in esports. In a statement, he mentioned, “We’re eager to share the stories and excitement surrounding the Global Esports Games, their athletes, and the gaming lifestyle. This marks the start of an exciting collaboration with the Global Esports Federation to create content appealing to both gamers and non-gamers worldwide.”

The agreement with Amazon MGM Studios comes at a time when another Amazon division, Twitch, announced plans to cut over a third of its staff, approximately 500 jobs, aiming for profitability. Twitch, a livestream platform involved in esports, has previously secured deals to broadcast live esports events and support popular gaming creators. Despite Twitch reducing spending in this area, MGM appears confident in its ability to cultivate a thriving business within the esports realm.
