iPhone 17 Pro’s New Telephoto Camera Could Change Mobile Photography
iPhone 17 Pro could launch with a 48MP telephoto camera, offering better portraits and low-light shots. Is this the biggest iPhone camera leap yet?

iPhone 17 Pro: Big Change in Telephoto Camera, Promises Better Portraits and Low-Light Photos
Apple is working on its next generation of smartphones, and if recent reports are true, the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max may come with major improvements in the camera section. According to the latest updates, these upcoming models could feature a new 48-megapixel telephoto camera, which will not only increase the quality but also give users a better photography experience.
Details of the New Camera
A known source in the tech world, Majin Bu, has claimed that the iPhone 17 Pro series will come with a telephoto camera that has a 35-mm equivalent focal length of 85mm. In comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max had a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with a 120mm focal length.
Changes in Zoom, But With a Smart Approach
The new camera is expected to offer 3.5x optical zoom, which is less than the 5x zoom seen in earlier models. However, there is a new benefit. This 48-megapixel camera will allow 7x “lossless” digital zoom, which uses in-sensor crop zoom technology, similar to what was used in the iPhone 16 Pro’s primary camera.
Better Portraits and Low-Light Performance
This new telephoto camera will not only improve zoom but also help take better portrait photos. With a higher megapixel count and better light capturing ability, photos taken in low light will look clearer and brighter. Also, because of the high resolution, cropping the image will not reduce the quality much.
Comparison: iPhone Old vs New Models
Here’s a comparison of the expected camera upgrade in iPhone 17 Pro with the iPhone 16 Pro:
Feature | iPhone 16 Pro Series | iPhone 17 Pro Series (Expected) |
---|---|---|
Telephoto Camera Resolution | 12 megapixels | 48 megapixels |
Focal Length | 120mm | 85mm |
Optical Zoom | 5x | 3.5x |
Digital Zoom (Lossless) | Not available | 7x (In-sensor crop zoom) |
Portrait Quality | Normal | Sharper and Better |
Low-Light Performance | Limited | Improved Light Capture |
Still Based on Leaks
For now, all this information is based on leaks and reports. Until Apple officially confirms the camera features, these claims should not be considered final. Like every year, the iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September — that’s when we’ll know the real details.
