Google has always made it clear where it wants to be a front-runner. The Pixel line-up comes out every year with one clear goal: to offer the best computational photography available. Now that the Google Pixel 11 Pro XL is out, that bet is even bigger. Now the Pixel 11 phone is bigger and stronger than ever. This is the best flagship phone that Google has made so far. It has Android 17 and the new Tensor G6 chip. The triple camera system is also much better. Here’s how it all breaks down after a few weeks of real-world use.

Google Pixel 11 Pro XL Design and Display: Polished and Purposeful

The Pixel 11 Pro XL doesn’t look like a brand-new phone. Pixel fans are still used to the sleek, oval camera bar. But the changes do matter. The most noticeable addition is HiLight, a color LED strip around the camera flash that lets you see at a glance when you have a call, a message, or an active Gemini interaction.

The 6.8-inch AMOLED screen is great. The screen’s brightest point is 3,600 nits, its colors are bright without being too saturated, and its refresh rate, which can be set between 1 and 120Hz, is smooth. It’s easy to see outside even in bright sunlight, and HDR content looks beautiful. It has top-notch connectivity, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. 5G upload speeds are also among the fastest available. (store.google.com)

Camera System: The Best Gets Better

This is where the Pixel 11 Pro XL justifies its price.

  • This camera has a 50 MP main sensor (f/1.68, 1/1.3″), a 48 MP ultrawide sensor (f/1.7), and a 48 MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom.
  • A larger telephoto sensor makes the camera 30% more sensitive to light, letting you use modes like Instant Night Sight to take beautifully lit photos faster. Pixel phones used to take a while to process Night Sight photos, but the Pixel 11 Pro XL can capture Night Sight images up to 4.5 times faster. Making this small change will change the way you shoot in low light for good.
  • It also shines on the ultrawide. When the zoom is set to 0.5x and the focus is set to macro, it uses the full 48 MP resolution, so even harsh cropping works. It’s the best phone ever for selfies and video calls, thanks to its 42 MP front camera.
  • The real story is the zoom story. Better than the Pixel 10’s 100x “Pro Res Zoom,” the Pixel 11 Pro series has Pro Zoom up to 120x. With AI, the Tensor G6 can now take photos at 120x zoom. It uses AI to improve detail at extreme zoom levels. When zoomed in between 10x and 30x, the results are among the clearest and most accurate available. This year, cameras introduced a new style system called “Camera Looks.”

It lets photographers pick the tone and color they want right when the picture is taken, instead of having to do it later when they are editing. The video is also very good. In 4K at 60 frames per second, it’s very smooth. The stabilization is great, and the color science stays the same when you zoom in and out. (store.google.com)

AI Features: Gemini Takes Center Stage

The Tensor G6’s TPU has 50% more compute for AI tasks, and you can tell this everywhere. The most interesting new feature is Rambler. It is a Gemini-powered voice input feature that transcribes speech accurately, even when the person speaking uses filler words. You can speak a note, a search, or a message, and it works in supported parts of the system. It works better and faster than anything on the old Pixel.

It already has a lot of AI tools, and Magic Capture makes them even better. Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Best Take, and Gemini Nano-powered features are now part of the wider AI experience. It’s also easier to use. Along with Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Best Take, these new features are old favorites. Not everything runs entirely on the device, as some features can also use Gemini models and cloud processing.

Google also says that monthly Pixel Drop updates will keep improving AI. This gives Google a big long-term advantage over competitors that only update AI when they update their hardware. (blog.google)

Performance: Quietly Excellent

Geekbench scores can vary by device and test conditions, but the Tensor G6 won’t beat Qualcomm’s newest phone in every benchmark race. It’s great for everyday use. The phone is very quick, animations are as smooth as can be, and demanding tasks like gaming on high settings, switching between heavy apps, and changing camera modes all run smoothly. Google says web browsing is 25% faster and app launches are 15% faster, and both claims hold up in real life.

The battery lasts a long time. The 5,115 mAh cell is rated for over 30 hours of battery life. The base model comes with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, which is more than enough for most users. However, the 16GB configurations are worth looking at for people who do a lot of work. (store.google.com)

Verdict

The Pixel 11 Pro XL has the best camera phone that Google has ever made. It may also be one of the best camera phones for Android right now. The Tensor G6 clearly improves photography, AI, and everyday speed. Instant Night Sight really changes things, 120x Pro Zoom is a feat of engineering, and Rambler makes it easy to type with your voice. The Pixel 11 Pro XL is a strong choice if you care about photography, want the latest version of Android 17, and value on-device AI.
