9 Everyday Phone Settings That Are More Useful Than You Think

Many individuals utilise their mobile devices regularly, yet many do not. There are many built-in settings in your phone that can enhance your phone’s performance and usage. But instead of checking them, users download supplemental applications to ease any frustrations or discontent they may feel regarding their device.

The reality is, some of the greatest solutions available for these frustrations or those that would improve the performance of each individual’s mobile device can easily be found within the native settings of their mobile device.

With only a few minor adjustments of individual settings within your mobile device, you can help to make your mobile device less disruptive, more productive, and generally easier to manage.

Here are nine everyday phone settings that are far more useful than most people realise.

1. Do Not Disturb scheduling

This helps when notifications keep wrecking your focus, sleep, or work time.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Focus
Pick a mode like Do Not Disturb
Tap Add Schedule
Choose Time

On Android
Open Settings > Notifications > Do Not Disturb
Tap Schedules or turn on automatically
Set the days and times

2. Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing tracking

Most people underestimate how often they unlock their phone until they see the actual number.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Screen Time
Tap Turn On Screen Time if it is off
Then check See All Activity for app usage, pickups, and notifications

On Android
Go to Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls
Check the dashboard for screen time, unlocks, and notification counts

3. Battery optimisation

Battery drain is not always about the battery itself.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Battery
Turn on Low Power Mode

On Android
Go to Settings > Battery
Look for options like Battery Saver, Adaptive Battery, Background usage limits, or App battery usage
Restrict apps that do not need to run constantly

4. Auto-brightness and display controls

A screen that is too bright at night or too dim in daylight gets annoying fast.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size
Turn Auto-Brightness on

On Android
Go to Settings > Display
Turn on Adaptive Brightness or Auto Brightness

5. Keyboard shortcuts and text replacement

If you type the same things again and again, your email address, home address, sign-off, payment details, or a standard reply, text replacement can save way more time than people expect.

6. Location access control

A lot of apps ask for location access even when they do not really need it. That affects both privacy and battery life.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services
Tap any app
Choose Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App, or Always depending on what is available.

On Android
Go to Settings > Apps > [App Name] > Permissions > Location
Choose Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow depending on the device.

7. Dark Mode

Dark Mode is no longer just about aesthetics.

On iPhone
Go to Settings > Display & Brightness
Choose Dark
You can also turn on Automatic to switch between Light and Dark at certain times.

On Android
Go to Settings > Display
Turn on Dark Theme or Dark Mode
Many phones also let you schedule it from sunset to sunrise

So, overall, you do not need to overhaul your phone to make it better. A few small changes in settings can improve everything.
