Google Docs is adding a new AI feature that helps users create formatted documents easily. This feature, called ‘Help me create,’ will be available to some Google Workspace users in early access.

Introduction to the ‘Help Me Create’ Feature in Google Docs

It can use information from files already saved in the Workspace account to generate new documents. Google says this feature can be used to create proposals, blog posts, press releases, dinner party menus, and more. Last month, Google also added an AI tool in Google Docs that can create images from text.

Google explained the new AI feature in Google Docs on its support pages. The ‘Help me create’ feature is part of Gemini for Google Workspace Alpha and can also be accessed through the company’s early access testing program. It will be available to all eligible users, but it may take some time before it’s available worldwide.

How to Access the ‘Help Me Create’ Feature

Once available, the ‘Help me create’ feature will show up at the top of a blank Google Docs page, next to options like Meeting notes, Cover images, Polls, and others. Users can also find it by going to File > New > Help me create.

When users click on the AI feature, a pop-up window will appear with a text box where they can enter their prompts. They can either type a general request for the content they want to create or add a Workspace file by typing ‘@’, then selecting the file from the drop-down menu.

Users can click the Create button to let Gemini generate a fully formatted document based on their prompt or the content from the chosen file. Google suggests using natural, conversational language to get the best results from the tool.

There are a few limitations to the tool. First, it is only available on desktop, so the Google Docs mobile app doesn’t have the AI feature. Second, the tool can’t use web search results or search through Workspace files unless they are specifically tagged. “Help me create” also cannot generate cover or inline images of people. Additionally, it can only extract content from Workspace files but cannot understand the structure or formatting of the original file.
