No need to touch the screen to turn pages on the new Kindle

For e-reader-obsessed readers, the ability to turn pages using physical buttons can be a great feature to have, but it’s hard to live without. It’s easy to understand why. After all, who wants fingerprints on their screen? Touching the screen to turn pages is not convenient for many people, and it seems Amazon has found a solution to this problem. A recent update to Kindle devices now includes a double-tap feature to turn pages, and this new technology is working on models like the Kindle Paperwhite and Colorsoft.

Kindle Double Tap Feature

Amazon hasn’t offered physical buttons on any Kindle device since the Kindle Oasis, while companies like Kobo still offer this feature on some e-readers. The Kindle Voyage, which was famous for its excellent contrast, also didn’t have buttons but had PagePress sensors. But Amazon has gradually phased out this feature in recent years. Now, though, Amazon has addressed this issue with a software update (via Good E-Reader). It has introduced a double tap to flip pages feature where users can lightly tap twice on the frame or the back of the device. The feature works using the accelerometer sensor, and can be tried out by sideloading the 5.18.1 update on Colorsoft. It performs pretty well and lets you flip pages without touching the screen.

Once the update is installed on your device, the feature is enabled automatically. If you don’t want to use the feature, you can manually disable it.

Not everything is perfect

However, as expected, Amazon’s feature is not perfect. With this feature, you can only scroll forward, but there is no double tap option to go back to the previous page. No matter which e-book you are reading, you have to tap the screen to go back. This can be inconvenient at times, especially when you accidentally skip a page and there is no way to go back. It would have been even better if Amazon added a feature that turns the page in the direction you double tap, but this would require additional hardware sensors, which are not available in current devices.

Still, this new update is very helpful for those users who hate fingerprints on the screen. The new double tap feature is available in 12th generation Paperwhite and Colorsoft. If you are one of those who get annoyed by repeatedly touching the screen, then this update has brought relief for you.
