Google Pixel 6a to Get Android 16 Update to Fix Overheating

Many users who use Google Pixel 6a have reported serious heating problems in their phones. In two cases, the phone even caught fire. After these incidents, Google decided to release a new software update. This update is made to protect the phone from battery overheating problems.

Starting from 8 July 2025, all Google Pixel 6a users will get the Android 16 update automatically. But this update will only affect those phones whose battery has completed 400 charge cycles. Only those phones will get the new battery control system.

What will change in Pixel 6a after the Android 16 update?

After this new update, the Pixel 6a software will restart and install the update. The devices that are listed as “Impacted” by Google will get new battery settings once the battery completes 400 charge cycles.

• Battery life may feel less than before

• Charging speed may become slower

• Battery percentage display may work a little differently until the phone adjusts to the new battery settings

All these changes are made to make the phone safe and reduce the chances of overheating.

This update will not affect every Pixel 6a phone

One important thing is that not every Pixel 6a phone is in the impacted list. Only those phones that show risk in battery or hardware data will get these changes.

Google has provided an official registration page where users can check if their Pixel 6a is an impacted device or not.

If your phone is not on this list, then your battery will keep working normally even after the update.

You can also get free battery replacement if eligible

If your Pixel 6a is on the impacted list, then Google is also giving a free battery replacement option.

Starting from 21 July 2025, users in India, the US, and some other countries can go to authorized repair centers and get the battery changed. If you cannot visit the center, then users in India and the US can also send the phone by mail to replace the battery.

You will also get a reminder at 375 charge cycles

As soon as your phone reaches 375 charge cycles, you will get a reminder alert. This will tell you that your device will soon shift to the new battery settings. This helps users to be ready in advance.

If your device is not impacted, then you will not get any reminder and your phone will keep working as usual.

You can install the update manually if you want

If you want to update your phone by yourself, then after 8 July 2025 you can manually download the latest version of Android 16. Otherwise, the system will automatically download the update when the phone is on charge and connected to the internet.

Google’s focus is now on both safety and performance

Google took this step to protect the phones that are at real risk of overheating, without disturbing the main functions. This step can become a guideline for future Pixel phones as well.
