Samsung tri-fold smartphone: A new folding phone may launch soon

Samsung is getting ready to launch a new phone that folds in a different way. This time, it is not just a normal foldable phone. New leaks suggest that Samsung is working on a tri-fold smartphone that will fold three screens together. This phone was accidentally revealed in Samsung’s One UI 8 update, where some animations gave a clear look at this new design.

Samsung’s trifold design seen in One UI 8

Samsung may have accidentally leaked the design of its upcoming Samsung tri-fold smartphone. In the latest update of One UI 8, some animations show a new type of multi-fold device. This design shows a dual-hinge system, camera setup, screen layout, and NFC chip location.

The phone might be called “Galaxy G Fold,” but in the One UI 8 animation files, it is labeled as “Multifold 7.” The first teaser of this phone was shown at the Unpacked event in January, where a simple drawing gave a hint of a triple-screen phone.

New design and folding style

The animations show that the phone will have three panels. When the phone is fully open, the right panel will have the rear camera setup with three lenses. The NFC chip is also placed in this panel. The middle panel acts as a cover display with a front camera that works even when the phone is folded. When the phone is fully opened, the front camera is still on the right panel, which also has the rear cameras on the back.

One animation shows how the phone folds. It has two hinges of different sizes. The left panel folds inward, and the right panel folds over it. But there is a warning that says not to fold the right panel first, or it may damage the phone, because the camera module will stop the phone from folding flat.

Samsung’s triple-fold design vs Huawei Mate XT

Samsung’s folding design is different from the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design. Huawei used a Z-shaped fold where one hinge folds in and the other folds out. This made it possible to use one, two, or all three screens at the same time. But one screen was always exposed, which made it easier to get damaged. Samsung’s G-shaped fold hides the screen when closed, giving it better protection.

This may only be a teaser for now

Right now, Samsung has not officially confirmed anything about this Samsung triple-fold smartphone. It is also possible that the animations are just for testing inside the company. But since the leaks are detailed, it seems Samsung is working seriously on this product.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, Samsung will launch the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and Flip FE. It is possible that the Galaxy G Fold may be shown as a teaser, but the full launch is expected later this year.

Launch timeline: When will the phone come?

A Korean news source The Bell, and leaker @Jukanlosreve said that Samsung will begin mass production of the phone in September 2025. So, the final launch may happen between October and December.

At the Unpacked event, Samsung will also launch the Galaxy Watch 8 series and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2025. In India, the event will start at 7:30 PM IST and will be live-streamed on Samsung’s YouTube channel.
