Huawei Pura X Max Leads the Wide Foldable Wave, Gets Ahead of iPhone

Huawei has officially unveiled its new foldable smartphone, the Huawei Pura X Max, which is being hailed as a possible turning point for the design of foldable smartphones, including Apple iPhone’s long-awaited arrival within the foldable smartphone market segment.

The Huawei Pura X Max is set to officially launch on April 20. It brings back a wider foldable design, both inside and out. The form factor is closer to earlier devices like the Oppo Find N and Google Pixel Fold, before most Android brands shifted towards taller, narrower outer screens.

The inner display is expected to feature an aspect ratio of around 16:11, offering a broader viewing experience, while the outer screen appears shorter and wider than what users are currently used to. The device also sports a large, prominent camera module on the back, signalling a focus on premium hardware.

Huawei Pura X Max Configuration

Huawei has not yet confirmed full specifications, but early listings suggest multiple high-end configurations. These include 12GB RAM paired with 256GB or 512GB storage, and 16GB RAM options with up to 1TB storage.

The device is expected to run on Huawei’s Kirin 9030 chipset, though official confirmation is still pending.

Design and Colour Options

Huawei Pura X Max has showcased several colour variants, including Interstellar Blue, Olive Gold, Phantom Night Black, Zero Degree White, and Vibrant Orange, pointing towards a strong emphasis on design alongside performance.

Nevertheless, the larger narrative is how this larger, wider foldable will eventually look when Apple introduces its first foldable iPhone(s). And while that happens, Samsung will be introducing a “wider” variant of its Galaxy Z foldable as well; other brands like Oppo and Honor are expected to bring out wide-style designs too.  This means that Huawei has gained an early edge when it comes to one of the most promising new design trends in foldables.

Though the Huawei Pura X Max may not get a launch outside of China, it has the opportunity to shape the way the rest of the world views smartphone designs as its competition starts adopting similar types of designs just as quickly.
