Is Instagram Snooping? 4 Privacy Settings to Change Right Now After Meta Ditches DM Encryption

Instagram has recently dropped the end-to-end encryption feature for direct messages (DMs). This means that now your messages are not fully private anymore.

So, the conversation between two people can now be accessed by Instagram or the parent company, Meta, anytime they want. Also, this end-to-end encryption feature has just dropped on Instagram and not on other Meta platforms, like WhatsApp and Facebook.

Consumer Watchdog Warns

With this news catching fire, consumer watchdog Which? is telling users to stay alert. In a blog post, they said, “Meta may gather far more information about you than you realise.”

This can be done by accessing your camera roll, tracking you across the web, or sharing information with advertisers.

Which? Tech writers say that if you agree to share your information on Instagram, the company can automatically track your data from every photo on your device, and then they will use that information to give you suggested advertising.

Settings to Change on Instagram

1. Limit Your Photo Access

When you first start using Instagram, you have to give it access to some of the things, mainly pictures. So, if you agree to give access to your photos, Instagram will automatically track the Metadata of all your pictures and will serve you content (like photos or reels) based on it.

So, if you are not okay with exposing your photos with meta, just limit the access using simple steps.

For Android- Go to Instagram > Permissions > Photos and Videos > Select Limited Access

For iOS- Go to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Photos > Choose Limited Access

2. Keep Your Activity Off

Meta uses some tracking tools, embedded in third-party websites, to connect your browsing activity with Instagram.

It helps them to serve you with targeted ads and links.

So, to stop this,

Go to Instagram > Account Centre > Your information and permission > Your activity on Meta technologies > Manage future activity > Disconnect Future Activity

3. Change Ad Preferences

Your physical shopping habits can also be tracked by Meta. Yes, you read right! Meta can be aware of your physical shopping as well because many retailers upload their customers’ lists, along with their email and phone number, directly to Meta Platforms.

Meta then matches that information and bombards you with specific ads, connecting offline activity to online.

To stop-

Go to Instagram > Account Centre > Ad Preferences > Manage info > Activity Information from Ad Partners > Review Settings > Select No.

4. Stop Sharing Data to Meta AI

Meta also uses your posted photos, captions and songs to train its AI, if you are above 18. It basically wants to stuff as much data as it can into its Artificial Intelligence.

To stop this behaviour-

Go to Instagram > Privacy Centre > AI at Meta > information you have shared on Meta Products. Then you can enter your email address and submit your request to turn it off.

By changing these settings, you can really help yourself save your data. However, no feature can still protect your DMs from being exposed to Meta, but these settings may help in some other way.

Now, talking about your conversations, try not to share any personal information on Insta DMs like otp, passwords, security codes and more confidential stuff.

Why has Instagram removed end-to-end encryption?

Meta has not given any public explanation regarding this step, but they have come up with this around the time of increasing privacy concerns.

End-to-end encryption guarantees that nobody, not even the platform providing the service, can view what the sender and receiver of an E2E message can see. This has been widely regarded as a good way to protect people’s privacy, but the critics (including certain governments and advocates for children’s safety) of this type of encryption claim that it makes detecting and preventing crime over the internet very difficult.

Now, till we get any way out for the safety of our Instagram DMs, let’s just change other settings to keep the stuff private.
