Declutter Your Phone: Here’s How To Free Up Space On Pixel Device

We use our smartphones in almost each and every step of our daily lives. Over days and months, we don’t release the storage in our phones that has been consumed by files like photos, videos and other data.
Therefore, in order to download new apps and media, or help your phone run better, space on the phone needs to be cleared.
While storage is where the data like photos and music is kept, memory is where programs, like apps and the Android system run.
In this article, we will guide you on how to free up space on a Pixel phone.
Note: Some of these steps work only on Android 11 or later. Therefore, make sure you have the latest version of Android on your phone.
Free up storage
Check what’s consuming your phone’s storage: Here’s how to do it
- Open your Settings app.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap a category.
Free up storage automatically
To clear backed-up photos and videos automatically when your device’s storage is almost full:
- Open your Settings app.
- Tap Storage > Free up space > Menu .
- Tap Settings.
- Turn on Smart Storage.
Free up storage manually
You can also free space from your Pixel phone’s memory manually with steps given below. To select from a list of photos, videos, and apps that you haven’t used recently:
- Open phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Storage > Free up space.
- To select something to delete, scroll to the category you want to delete and tap Select files. (If nothing is listed, tap Browse.)
- Choose the files you wish to delete, or choose all of them.
- Tap Move files to Trash.
To choose from all data:
Delete backed-up photos & videos: You can delete the backed up Google Photos on your phone or tablet. You can find the backed-up copies in the app when your device is connected to the internet.
Delete downloaded media: To delete content like movies, music and other media from other sources, delete from the app that you used to download it.
Uninstall unnecessary apps: You can uninstall unnecessary apps that you have not been using. You can download it again when you need it later. You don’t have to buy the app again if you paid for it.
Clear the app’s cache & data
You can delete temporary data by clearing the cache. Some apps may be slow the next time you open them.
You can also permanently delete all app data by clearing the storage. It is recommended to delete the data within the app first.
Here’s how to clear your app’s cache and data:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap Apps > See All Apps
- Tap the app.
- Tap Storage & cache Clear cache or Clear storage
Delete downloaded files
To save space, you can delete downloaded files you don’t need.
Check files that are using space on your phone or tablet. Open Settings app > tap Storage > Free up space > Browse.
Transfer files to a computer
You can move files and folders to a computer with a USB cable, and then delete them from your phone or tablet.
